Wow, those are huge ant hills!
That's what I thought. I haven't seen ant hills that big in too many other places. The crazy thing is that people will try to get rid of them, and the ant colonies come right back. The soil and terrain must be just perfect for them, that's for sure.

Ant hills! Yes, even in upstate New York we get pretty big ant hills. They don't occur all over, but there are a few places around here that can get some rather substantial-sized ant hills. No matter what people do to eradicate them, they come right back in the same area. Typically, the more established ant hill colonies are at least 18" high. Here are some that I photographed today. These particular ant hills were nonexistent at the beginning of the summer.

I never noticed these two colonies before. They seem to be relatively new. You can get an idea about how big they are by the vegetation around them.

These three ant hills are new this year. The ants in these colonies moved from the three colonies that are about 500 feet down the road.

Check out the many entrances/exits these hill have. I was rather surprised to see that many.

"Nukem' from orbit. It's the only way to be sure!"
Very sound advice from the movie "Aliens"

WE get those in the South all the time. You have to kill the hill and at the same time poison your entire lawn and then it becomes the neighbors problem. Problem solved, at least my problem is.

No! you don't see ant hills that big around here!. When I lived in NC I would see high and large fire ant hills. Three plus feet wide and 3-4 ft. high. The biggest here I have seen maybe 2 feet across and less then a foot high.

Yup, we do have them around here. The only place I have seen them is on Bunn Hill Rd and Fuller Hollow Rd in Vestal. Check them out. I am serious. I was so surprised by their size, that's why I photographed them. I figured people wouldn't believe me. The left-hand ant hill in the first photos I published today is the biggest I have seen around here. That was not a 6 inch high ant hill. It was at least 18 inches high. Very scary, to say the least.

I have found out what these ants are, thanks to a reference librarian friend of mine. They are called Allegheny mound ants and are found from Nova Scotia to Alabama. You can read more here. According to what I read these ants can create mounds up to a meter (3+ ft) in height. YIKES!

Today's photos are the result of a walk through the woods and the neighborhood. It's always fun to see what's lurking around the underbrush.

These elderberries aren't very elder yet.

I have always liked ferns. There is something nicely primitive about them. :)

When I saw this tree trunk, I immediately saw the face in it. It reminded me of all those haunted woods with animated evil trees.

A weird, dried out plant. It rather looks like a scarecrow in a planty sort of way. :)

I just liked the look of this dried out plant. I didn't notice the bug on top until I had uploaded the image to my computer.

Looking at this chicken made me laugh when I realized that it's the closest living relative to the T Rex.

Not a lot of time to take photos today, besides, it's been looking like it's going to pour outside most of the day. Anyway, I finished these socks last night and photographed them today as I like to keep a record of my finished knitting projects. Some knitters refer to this particular yarn with its distinctive colors as "clown sock yarn." I hate clowns but love the yarn. :)

Spousal unit finally finished making the replacement flyer for my spinning wheel. Gary made it out of a solid piece of oak, unlike the original which was made from laminated wood. I used it this afternoon and my wheel works better than with the original flyer. No wobble or falling off. Below are a few photos of my new flyer. For those of you who may not be familiar with the components of a spinning wheel, the flyer is the U-shaped piece with all the cup hooks on it. It's the piece that guides the yarn onto the bobbin.

Of course, I could not let the day go by without the obligatory squirrel at the bird feeder photo. :) This is one tenacious squirrel that does not give up quickly.

Yet another squirrel photo. Sorry. :) Caught our neighborhood red squirrel near the bird feeder today when I took the dog out.

About an hour ago, I walked outside about 10 minutes before the sky opened up. I got a nice photo of a yellow jewelweed flower growing under our rhododendron.

I then looked up to look at how dark the sky had gotten and noticed a huge squadron of turkey vultures flying overhead. Those black spots on the photo are the vultures in flight. I know it's not the greatest photo and wish they had been in better focus but they caught me off-guard. In all, there were over 30 vultures that flew overhead and roosted in the woods behind our house. I counted 23 vultures in the photo below.

I hope not. :) A friend of mine said that now she knows where to dump a body, if necessary. :) Actually, I think they roost their because there is a big hill with woods behind our house and it is protected from a lot of the nastier weather, especially strong winds. It's also where the bear lives. Hmmmm.....
