Piperbarb's 2013 Project 365

8-10-13:

After the humidity and rain we have had the past couple of days, it turned out to be a beautiful Saturday morning. I took my computer, tea and assorted other "stuff" outside, went to the picnic table we have in a nice shady spot. I have been enjoying the morning's nice breeze, relaxing with a nice cup of lapsang tea, and checking up on how to add a Linux partition to my Mac. Yeah, really geeky, but that's me. :)

Oh, and yes, I did have bug repellent on so the little nasties wouldn't eat me alive as they like to do. :)

That looks great. We have only a couple months of the year where we could actually sit outside without either burning to a crisp, freezing or getting really wet.

HaHa! Bird feeder drama continues. I came home and there was Scrat, on the back of the tree trunk, peeking around at me. Too bad she moved before I got out of the car. Anyway, here's today's bird feeder drama.

I just love nuthatches. They are fun to watch, going up and down the tree. Here is one that visits the tree numerous times a day. Also, this one does not seem to mind getting photographed.

I came home today to spousal unit showing me what he photographed in the barn this afternoon. For someone who really hates spiders, he sure took a lot of photos of this wolf spider that was crawling around on one of the walls in the barn. BTW, the title was Gary's idea, not mine. :)

Today was a very long, tiring day at work, but I was able to get a couple of shots of my bird feeder visitors.

I have realized that chickadees are pretty shy birds, at least the ones around here. That makes them pretty hard to photograph up close and personal without them flitting off into the tree. I really don't want to just get photos of chickadee butts, so I have had to be patient. Here is one I snapped right after I got out of the car this afternoon.

Sparrows do not seem to be as shy as chickadees. This guy kept turning around and looking at me after I'd take a photo, then go back to picking seeds.

...but all us geeks want to know if you got that Linux running on your Mac yet? :D

Sent from my Galaxy Nexus

Yes, without much problem. I gave up on Ubuntu 13.04 because it was very unstable and doing weird things to the Linux partition. I ended installing 12.04, which works like a champ, doesn't play funky with the partitions, and is very, very stable. I just have a little tweaking to do to get it to adjust the screen brightness, otherwise it works perfectly. I have 12.04 on my Dell XPS 17" (L702x) laptop. It's been running perfectly without a single crash for way over a year now. That was a really easy, no tweaking necessary installation.

Macs, are, well, Macs, so I expected a little silliness. I figure I have a two week vacation coming up, starting Friday afternoon, so I will spend a morning getting any nit-noid issues cleaned up.

Thanks for asking. Glad I'm not the only geek. :)

Okay, first my obligatory bird photo. :) It seems that most of us who photograph birds often try to get that spectacular, unusual, interesting bird image. Well, a lot of times that is just not possible. Sometimes, all you get is a view from below. Here's mine. :)

Now on to some small, but eye-catching flowers. Below are two images of jewelweed. It grows along ditches in partial sunshine and in moist or damp areas with lots of shade. I think it's a very pretty flower. When fully opened, it's about one inch long (2.5 cm).

My original photography teacher back in the dark(room) ages had an interesting take on these obligatory photos. He called them Dewey fern photos. They encomposed dewey ferns, spider webs, sunsets, moon shots, you know all the cliche shots we all shoot. his instructions to use was to shoot them every chance we got BUT to try to shoot them in a way that is not seen very often. I had forgotten this little gem till this post. I am going to have to remember it.

Don,

I like that. Now that I think of it, I think that was what I was trying to do and say. The chickadee photo is not the typical cliche chickadee photo. I agree, I, too, will have to shoot more of those cliche images in a different way. Thanks for bringing that up.

Here are two quick shots I took this morning just before I got in the car to go to work. We have a few doves that seem to chase the blue jays away. This blue jay was definitely not happy.

I photographed this sparrow just as it noticed me and took off.
