Moss can be such an interesting subject, and it doesn't care how often you photograph it. :)

8-2-13: The Red Squirrel Saga

Our local, not so friendly, red squirrel decided it was going to take up residence in the barn. Spousal unit found the first nest and cleaned it out. Yesterday, he found another nest on the other side of the barn, and cleaned that one out, also. As he was moving a lawnmower in the barn, our neighborhood red squirrel, now very, very ticked off, started throwing little bits of paper down on Gary from one of the rafters that the second nest had been. The squirrel, which we have named, Scrat (from the movie, Ice Age), then ran down and came face to face with Gary, squeaked at him, then went scurrying out of the barn. That was yesterday.

Today, I was putting my stuff in the car so I could go to work and guess who was near the bird feeder, squeaking at me like it was my fault his/her nest was removed from the barn. I got these two photos in the morning:

When I came home from work, guess who was on the ground by the bird feeder, getting lots of fallen seeds. Yup, it's the squirrel. It totally ignored me as I got out of the car, took my camera, and snapped a few. I think Scrat is getting used to us.

You sure have a talent for it! It was really fun to read, and you're right, it went very well with your squirrel series! Lol :D
Bill,

Thanks. Getting the background story can make all the difference when it comes to a series of photos.

Bill,

Thanks. I enjoy writing, and I do try to make it fun. Sometimes the commentary is what really makes the series. It's true that a picture says a thousand words, but it never hurts to give the image(s) need a little help. :)

My students loved the vulture series, especially the photo where it looked like the vulture mooned me (Wednesday's post). They think I'm a little weird but totally accept it because I'm a science teacher and science teachers are supposed to be a little eccentric. :)

8-3-13: Flora

I love weekends, especially when the weather is perfect. Today was one of those days.

Having no explicit photo mission in mind, I just walked around until I saw things that hit my fancy. Below are images of the flora I found.

These are very black, round berries on some type of tree. As you can see in the second photo, the berries are very, very black.

I have no idea what this weed is but the flowers were yellow until they turned to see. The first image is really interesting when you realize that the star-like pattern of the stems repeats itself. It's a perfect example of fractals in nature. It's very obvious when you look at the second photo.

8-3-13: Fauna (or at least bees)

There were a lot of bumblebees out and even some honeybees. Due to the issue of hive collapse, I did not see many honeybees last year. I have seen quite a few during the past few weeks, though.

Considering that bumblebees look so clumsy, it's amazing how acrobatic they can be. They can put the Flying Walenda Family to shame. :) Note the weird yellow lumps on the outside of the bumblebee's hind legs. I have never noticed that in a bumblebee before. Anyone have any ideas what/why the yellow lumps are there?

This was one very busy honeybee. I am surprised they like goldenrod.

Lovely photos, Barbara! What a fun "photo walk". I also very much enjoy the information you provide.

What yellow lumps?
