Wikipedia states New Jersey south to Florida, but what do they know!! He could have made a wrong turn.
We've had other critters end up around here that are not indigenous to the area. With global climate change, we are also starting to see fauna that normally was never around here. So any thing is possible. :)

It was such a beautiful afternoon I had to go for a walk. On that walk, I came across a swallowtail butterfly, then a very noisy catbird. That was before I went into the woods behind our house and "stalked" the vultures. :)

This black swallowtail butterfly kept landing on the shoulder of the road then flitting off again.

7-29-13: Vulture Stalking :)

After I came back from my walk, I went up into the woods. I flushed out one turkey vulture but didn't get a good image of it. After that, I walked over to my neighbor's pond and another turkey vulture came flying out of the woods near the edge of the pond. I am always amazed at how large they really are. According to the Cornell Ornithology Lab Web site, turkey vultures typically have a wingspan of about 6 feet.

7-30-13: Morning Photos

As I walked out to go to work, there were about 6 blue jays hanging out on the ground below the bird feeder: both parents and 4 fledglings. As soon as they saw me, the flew off into the tree. By the time I put my stuff in the car, one of the fledglings decided to come back.

I also saw this catbird. I still think we have more than the usual number of catbirds this year.

7-30-13: Afternoon Photos

Back to vulture stalking. Spousal unit said he went up into the woods and saw vultures roosting all over the place. When they flew off, he said there was a whole squadron of them. I thought he was exaggerating. I went into the woods to take a look. They were roosting all over the place. When they flew off (of which none went far because the venison dinner was still on the ground), I counted at least 20. I think he was right, there was a squadron of them. I asked how many flying objects make up a squadron, Gary say, "24."

I became very curious about turkey vultures, especially since we have so many at the moment. It turns out that they are very social, gregarious birds that then to hang together in large groups. The fledglings usually stay with the parents until early fall, when they migrate to warmer climes.

Oh, and here's an interesting vulture factoid. When turkey vultures feel threatened, they will spit very strong stomach acid at whatever is threatening them. Nice thought. :)

Anyway, here are some of today's vulture stalking images.

you got a few good shots there Barbara
Roy,

Thanks. I took over 100 shots of those guys this afternoon. 59 were keepers, and about 10 of those are really, really good. I just posted the best of the best. I plan on putting them together into a video and use it when I teach food webs. I do have to get a shot of the poor, dead, decaying deer, but I won't post that here.

This is the last day of vulture stalking... until the next dead animal in the woods.

I snapped this one in the morning when I was walking the dog. There were two remaining vultures. I think they were getting tired of me taking their pictures for 3 days.

In the afternoon, I went to check if there were any vultures left. There were none, but I caught this image of a great spangled fritillary

Rain almost all day long made me look for indoor photos. I went to the barn, which I affectionately refer to as Gary's Playhouse. Gary has his power toys, I have my techno gizmos. :) Here are a few views of his man cave.
