Brain freeze- Snaphappy playing & learning

Well during todays try at the monthly challenge I learned that the remote and my camera get bored when I take too long to set up a shot which is really frustrating when each time I have to reset up as my partner walked away each time...

On my D5100 i set the remote timer to shut off after 15 minutes in custom settings.
Maybe your D7000 has been set to turn off sooner.
If you're taking more than 15 minutes to set a shot up, I can see why your partner walks away, lol.

Rexer John you are the BEST! I searched and searched and found what you are talking about! Mine was set to 1min! No wonder I was having such a hard time and was so frustrated! Everytime I had to go down the goat path my horse was standing on and around through the gate and over into the deep snow where my camera was on a tripod to keep it safe from curious goats. Everytime I'd walk away to reset camera my horse would walk away and I'd have to get him back up the path. I didn't want to use a halter or rope because it wouldn't have looked as nice. I finally stuffed his mouth full of hay cubes to keep him there and ran back and forth then I ended up with the mare in the shot too because she wanted treats so I just went with it. I couldn't have my camera too close because the horses don't like the nikon click and I wanted him to stay still not spook.
Well, this monthly challenge I learned to think out of the box setting up a shot and because of you Rexer John next time it won't be so damn frustrating! Thanx!

Yesterday I had such fun playing with shadows, working on my shutter speed and enjoying the sunshine fresh air and beautiful birds
Eagle up in the tree, goldeneye ducks down in the very very low river

I just got my remote for my D5100 and have not even used it yet. I am leaving in a few minutes to work on a project and will be using the remote. I had not seen this setting and when I looked it was set to 1 min. Thanks for the hint, it would have made my head explode trying to figure this one out.

Walking out on the almost dry riverbed
NIK_0869.jpg

Hubby was hucking rocks and bet me I couldn't get the splash he was going to make. I was set to Q and had my 18-55mm on so this is a crop but nailed it :)
NIK_0876.jpeg

I liked the clear water and shadows of my boys and trees
NIK_0879.jpeg

Double shadow I'm thinking the sun coming from the right made the thick dark shadow and the glare from the snow on the left made the lighter shadow
NIK_0882.jpeg

Pretty soon the mountains will thaw and this bank will be under water and the park and walkways above will flood.
NIK_0916.jpeg

Hubby also bet me that I couldn't capture these birds. I'd been down leaned against tree focusing on mallards but I got got them too and all 3 shots turned out pretty good in my opinion no blurs or fuzziness

I like the shapes of the dry stream bed but couldn't decide which way I liked it better. Can't wait to learn about leading lines in my class :)

I had so much fun trying things and with my 70-300mm I got to see wildlife up closer than I'd have been able to see with just my eyes

I like the expression of the dog laying down. It hit 77° here today so I was out in shorts also but I was wearing shoes.

Ok will go back to using my Aperture 2 to resize and upload to gallery.

Tracsoft I wasn't in shorts but I was in a t-shirt :) They wore rubber boots or those horrid plastic croc shoes out to the trampoline but left their shoes on the snowdrift. It's getting mucky so shoes would have made a big mess to jump on

Tonight the sky was just so clear and full of stars I had to pull out my tripod when I got home from my photography class. I learned a bit about composition tonight but had a boring project in class trying to capture a table full of objects (read junk). Not at all interesting to me and with 18 people crowding in to take "original angle" photos at the same time of a cluttered table of "stuff" Ugh! I'm very quiet and vertically challenged so was frustrating and boring subject for me. I understand what she was trying to get us to do but 18 very different objects (size colours, shapes etc) on a 2x3ft table in the corner of a room with 18 people and cameras was chaotic and only the pushy annoying people got any shots. Snaphappy me took only 4 pics and I really want to delete all of them so very uninteresting to me

Ah well, the sky was so clear and the thrill of waiting for that long exposure to flash up on my screen gave me 5 pics that I enjoyed snapping to end my day :) No composition here just so many bright pretty lights up in the sky and the thrill of waiting for the results on a quiet peaceful night :) I don't know where the moon was but it must be very low because the sky was clear all around but moon was a no show. I sharpened and tried lightening it to show more stars (amazing what I can pull out by lightening the pic) but I darkened it a bit instead because this looks like what I see when I look up.

Good job! I tried to capture Orion one night last week. I thought it came out great for being hand held. Thumbnail looks perfect, but I wasn't as steady as I thought when it was enlarged.

Shooting something that is boring is good for you. You have to work three times as hard to get something that is interesting.
I have been wanting to shoot the moon for the last couple of nights but it is not coming out till after midnight.

Marilynne I like shooting orion too. Now that its warmer (and I'm not so shivery) when I don't bring out my tripod using the top of a fence post or the railing on my kids playcentre works fine too I just have to crouch and get as comfortable as possible so I can stay still. I did some really fun ones only using my kids playcentre railing to steady my camera last week. I like night shoots because it's so peaceful and quiet :)

I know Tracsoft I was just really frustrated by the way it was set up. I'm not a pushy person and 18 people shooting into a corner given 10mins to come up with most interesting shot was upsetting as I'd get my camera set up and find a window to shoot only to have a camera or arm or person stand in front of me. 1 or 2 people at a time would have been nice and allowed for creativity. Next week portraits eek!

Spring!
I was working on my DOF and wanted the background blurred but so much that you can't see the snow at the end of the walkway. I needed a narrower perspective (??) I think so want revisit this with my 70-300mm to see if it can keep the hot-wire fence on the left out of my pic.

I think I'm finally understanding the fast/ slow shutter speeds. I'm getting closer to choosing the right number the first time rather than just randomly picking a number and seeing what happens

This second photo was taken almost an hour later and the trampoline was more in the shadow of the house. I think I like this better than the stronger light photo of my 2 younger kids it made for nicer richer colour.
Photos are darker looking because there is a netting between my subject and my camera. I wanted to practice my shutter but also learned a little of about choosing my lighting better

Figured I should hurry out and try my flower dof experiment before the snow flies again :(
Its over cast and I couldn't replicate my settings from yesterday because my 70-300mm is unable to do f3.2 I'll have to try a similar experiment on another day and have more scientific results LOL

Yes geese form very strong bonds to each other even as youngsters and these 2 are a mated pair. He (white one) will always always allow her to have first choice on any and all good treats. The light and their pose drew my camera up to capture it. Looks like spring to me :) Just hope they're wrong about the snow in the forecast:(

I did not know that. We have Canadian Geese down here year round. They find the protected lakes in the parks and stay. On occasions they have to be removed to control the population to a manageable number.

Geese eat predominately grasses thats why they're found in parks etc and are such pests. Ducks are our weed and bug eaters but my geese are the security guards and keep the ducks safe especially from overhead predators. Even just the geese I have can make a huge mess and garden beds have to be well fenced or they'd make it disappear in no time at all.
