Likes system updated - Best answer, Unthank/Unlike and Dislike added

I updated the like system today to include some new, hopefully useful features.

Some of you suggested that we add a Unthank/Unlike in case something is clicked by mistake. This has been added.

I want to try out a Dislike button. If it doesn't work or causes too much trouble, I'll disable it.
Here's how it works:
  • The dislike works like a down vote and can actually hide a post if it gets too many dislikes (currently when (dislikes - likes) >= 5)
  • No one can see who clicked on dislikes, only that a post has x number of dislikes This was changed
  • Only experienced members, staff, and contributing members can use dislikes

Best answers have also been added for forums that more commonly contain question/answer type threads.
  • Best answers will be highlighted green when they receive enough votes. (currently 5)
  • You'll get a count under your usernames in posts

If your post has over 10 likes, it will now be highlighted yellow

New settings here: http://nikonites.com/thanks.php?do=profile&action=options
  • Disable the display of likes in your posts (on the left side under your name)
  • Choose to receive an email when you get a like/dislike/best answer
  • Disable notifications when you get a like/dislike/best answer

You'll also notice that this page now has more stats: http://nikonites.com/thanks.php?do=hottest

Please post any feedback here :)

Had just posted this elsewhere so moved it here

I notice we have a dislike button, bad move it will end up being used for the wrong reasons and cause problems,if you dont agree then you should explain why not just click dislike its rude,at the moment if you dislike someone you ignore them,on another forum i was mod on three times a conflict between members ended up with the dislike button being used for no more than personnel reasons.

It turns all photo posts into a critique post which if people wanted that they would post in that section IMO you get better harmony by ignoring most people and things you dont like.

Ok, and clicking best answer does not let you also like a post. I'm assuming the reverse is also not possible (clicking like and then clicking best answer).

Thanks for the additions John!

Also, I'm trying to figure out the best place to put the buttons. I kind of like them under the post to the left in the footer. It makes things flow a little better. Does anyone think otherwise?

I think it being at the bottom left (coupled with REPLY, etc. on the right) gives a nice line of delineation between each post

Like I said - I want to see how this works. I've disabled it in the general photography forums and photo evaluation forums.

Correct - they are not meant to be used at the same time, but there are cases where they are both displayed since a thread in a forum can either be a question or a general coment/picture.

Thanks @jdeg i dont like the dislike but ime happier if its out of the photo forums,i just hope ime wrong,we lost a couple of valuable members on my previous forum because of misuse and it was too late to get them back,it would be better if you could only dislike a post if you quoted it in a reply explaining why.

Not sure if I like the dislike thing. If you don't like the post/thread then move along. This may cause some bad karma. Just my .02

I agree Mike. Anonymous dislikes are a recipe for trouble. If you dislike something then at least you should have to the explain why.
In human interaction likes are a positive expression but dislikes are ten times more powerful because they are negative and people react more.
One of the great things on this forum is the positive helpful mindset I would hate to lose that.

You're absolutely right. I wish I could require an explanation or only allow a dislike on text. I don't want it to be used for photos, that's not helpful. I want it to be used in cases where a post is so bad that it shouldn't even be displayed. Perhaps the word dislike can be changed to something else?

It's a good start Jdeg, but we need to go further than this. How bout some more buttons. ie...

I like you.
I don't like you.
Stop whining.
You're annoying sometimes.
Can I borrow that lens.
This picture hurts my eyes.
Is that a Tamzooka in your pocket or are you just glad to see me.
Oh no! Not this sh*& again!
Do you have anything constructive to say or are you just here to make jokes?

I did click "Best Answer" and "Like" on the original post from JDEG in this thread. So you can do it.. Try it. You will like it.

I would love to click on the "Oh no! Not this sh*& again!" on many of the posts here. But at least being a moderator I can just delete and ban them. LOL

I just disliked @weebee post, but I don't like that it only says 1 member disliked this post.
It should say Blacktop disliked this post. If I'm going to dislike something, I want that person to know who it was. I don't want to hide behind my dislike.

In addition, may I suggest a "Facepalm (This Post)" button?
