On Monday, I went and did a bit of shopping. I've been thinking for a long time about getting into food photography. It's something I'd really like to do, and since I love to cook, I think it would be another layer of fun.
I knew I needed a few things to spruce up my kitchen for shooting. I started out by buying some bowls and plates. Mine are just fine, but they don't fit the style I want in my food shots. So I now have half a drawer full of plates and bowls that don't match each other or anything I already have. The second thing I did was buy stuff for a homemade light modifier. For under $20, I bought a 9x12 photo frame and a book of 9x12 tracing paper. Put the two together and you get a light softener. I tried it out in my kitchen with an old Kodak Signet I bought at an antiques fair a few weeks ago.
I really like these ones, but I could do with a bit stronger light. I'm currently using a kind of wimpy 13W desk lamp, so I might buy myself a more powerful one. But If I shoot during the middle of the day and I use the desk light, t's just bright enough, so it works for now.
