Fall has officially arrived here in Montana, and the weather has turned chilly and a bit more drizzly. I like the way it looks this time of year, and I took the opportunity this afternoon to do some shooting around my town.

Holy crap I really need to update this!

Okay, these are from a while back.

Here's an example of why you return to places you've already shot. I've taken photos at this baseball field before, but never during the late afternoon sun. I love the lines I got from it.

Last weekend was the annual Harvest Fest. It's a celebration about harvest time for the local farmers. There's people out selling stuff, live entertainment, food carts, and even a cattle drive in the middle of downtown. I didn't stay that long, but I did do some street shooting that I am pretty happy with.

PART 1

Have you ever inadvertently photobombed yourself?

On Monday, I went and did a bit of shopping. I've been thinking for a long time about getting into food photography. It's something I'd really like to do, and since I love to cook, I think it would be another layer of fun. :)

I knew I needed a few things to spruce up my kitchen for shooting. I started out by buying some bowls and plates. Mine are just fine, but they don't fit the style I want in my food shots. So I now have half a drawer full of plates and bowls that don't match each other or anything I already have. The second thing I did was buy stuff for a homemade light modifier. For under $20, I bought a 9x12 photo frame and a book of 9x12 tracing paper. Put the two together and you get a light softener. I tried it out in my kitchen with an old Kodak Signet I bought at an antiques fair a few weeks ago.

I really like these ones, but I could do with a bit stronger light. I'm currently using a kind of wimpy 13W desk lamp, so I might buy myself a more powerful one. But If I shoot during the middle of the day and I use the desk light, t's just bright enough, so it works for now.

I've been focusing on doing food photography stuff lately. Recently I made an el-cheapo light diffuser that I tested out, and I built a rustic looking tabletop. More on that later.

So, I made my first attempt yesterday with an afternoon cup of tea.

In these shots I used a flourescent desk lamp, my homemade diffuser, and a piece of white cardboard as a reflector. A simple reflector is excellent at softly brightening the shadows for a really natural look. I needed to put the camera on my tripod thanks to the low light and my need to use one hand to hold the reflector.

I'm pretty happy with this as a first attempt.

Now, today I planned out an actual food shoot. I cooked something, used one of my fancy plates, styled it, and used my new lighting setup. I am super pleased with the way these shots turned out.

Recipe here

So... does anyone actually look at this thread anymore? I'm curious, because I haven't really seen much traffic at all lately. No one comments, no one likes. Have I done something wrong?

Anyway, here are today's photos.

These all look rather delicious and great idea that you include a link to the recipe.

I have always liked your photos and I think the reason is you aren't one who holds back when something new should be attempted.
Keep up the good work and … watch the waist line.
