Very early this morning I watched this owlet do a couple of practice flights of 3 feet, then a full takeoff and flight from the nest to the next tree. This might well have been this owl's first flight. Way cool.

After young owls leave the nest they often climb up the sides of trees with their powerful talons and a little help from wing power here and there.

Great series on the GHO owlets. I haven't had the time to get out much this year during owlet season. Hopefully, next year.

When I have been watching a pond with several pairs of Avocets, they all seem to have their own little feeding territory. If a bird from another pair wanders too close, they engage in a little battle. I don't think the birds ever really hurt each other, and it seems to mostly be for show. It's a "come on, give us some privacy" kind of thing.They make a high pitched beep, beep, beep kind of sound.
