This Bald Eagle was collecting sticks to bring back to the nest for "nestorations" this morning. I don't believe this pair has laid eggs yet. They are procrastinators, I guess.

I spent most of my morning yesterday watching Great Blue Herons at a pond by a rookery. So far no birds have paired off, but they will very soon. This bird, in full breeding colors, gave me a few nice in flight shots.

Each spring Great Blue Heron males arrive at the nesting site, which is usually several nests in a cluster of trees called a rookery or heronry, before the females arrive. The male tries to attract the females with displays and other courtship behaviors. The male in this picture, sitting on the very top of the trees at a local rookery, might well be looking off into the distance for his potential mate. (That's romantic if you are a heron, trust me )

I've had a few GBHs let me get close enough to run up on minimum focusing distance with my 200-500. Most aren't that friendly.
