Each spring Great Blue Heron males arrive at the nesting site, which is usually several nests in a cluster of trees called a rookery or heronry, before the females arrive. The male tries to attract the females with displays and other courtship behaviors. The male in this picture, sitting on the very top of the trees at a local rookery, might well be looking off into the distance for his potential mate. (That's romantic if you are a heron, trust me :) )
