When I look at photos, mine included, when I am not logged on, they are allowed to be shared (this does not happen when I am logged in). That really bothers me. I can understand the advertising and that does not bother me, but I do not want other people to be able to share my photos on facebook, twitter, etc. Is there any way the sharing can be turned off?

Not sure how much of an issue that really is. People can easily right click and save an image from a forum to their drive and share it at will anyway. This is the chance we take when we upload our images to the interweb like this

This is a bad error in judgment on your part. I like Nikonites, it is a very nice site and I want to continue to stay. Please don't do this again in the future.
Again, you have my full understanding in terms of trying to drive revenue, but you can't use copyrighted material to do it without asking for permission. I don't give it.
Why?
1) I don't want any ADS ever on my images
2) I can't control who you advertise. For all I know, my name, my copyright mark and my image could advertise a Porn site. NO THANK YOU
3) How do you know I haven't licensed my images to someone who actually pays me and you put a competitors image on the same one I licensed out.... that would cost me money and you know where that would lead
Bottom line, it isn't the way to do things. You can have banner ads, side bar ads etc. please don't associate our images with any advertiser. I even dislike the ads in the middle of the forums were we post. In a way, I post a picture in a folder and there could be a product ad in a folder I can't stand, but my image is supporting the viewing of that ad. So be it, but not with a banner or sticky or link on my images.
Anyway, it is what it is, I have had my say. How long was this going on and how many links or Pin-its etc do you think happened? Is there any way to track it? I don't want my images on Pin-It or anything else like that, knowingly.

I agree with you on that one Joe...I was just thinking most of the things posted here are small file sizes so I think the idea of theft is sort of not that big a deal but this sharing across social networks with just one click stuff especially by people who are not even members of the forum is a bad deal.

We (the users) have full control in the size and quality of images we upload to sites such as this one. Part of doing so is understanding they are being uploaded to the internet for all to see and may indeed become part of image search results on sites like Google and Yahoo etc. If we have images we feel that strongly about, we can 1) not post them (not a viable option considering what this site is all about) or 2) post them and use a reduced quality and size or watermark them so they are not as attractive to stealing.
If an image is licensed or 'sold' to another party as Art mentioned above, maybe I shouldn't upload another version of it on a site like this where it can be used. It's up to ME to control how I SHARE my images and understand they could be saved easily by someone else and I would have no control what happened to them after that.
What it comes down to is personal responsibility. Sounds like John is working on another solution for us anyway
Apart from the ads I would like to disable the sharing feature completely - it is separate from the other Pinterest link, which is what you turned off.

I'm pretty sure if someone wants to save any of anyones images, they will.. It's the internet.. Right click, save. Bam, it's now yours.
Yeah I was just thinking I have used Flickr to post images here and elsewhere for a long time now and I'll be damned if you can't share them to every social networking site in the world...not much difference really...now since I have my own server space I am using that to host my images...I used to do it that way a few years back.

If you post then you can learn from others, if you don't post then you don't learn. The primary reason I share is to learn, so I have an expectation of trust on this site. Well tonight I find out that my personal pictures are open to non-members, shame on me, guess I will not be able to do that in order to solicit others suggestions to improve on my hobby.

That is the nature of a VB forum. I suggest posting small images and watermarking them if you are concerned.

I have done lots of film printing but very little digital printing. What is the "safest" size image to post on any given online site that would still allow for nice resolution photos on a monitor yet make so that a 8 X 10 print would look like crap? That is the first thing I would like to discuss.
When I started my Area 52 thread in 365 category I used photobucket. So if you look at the beginning pages of my thread the images suck (in more ways then one too LOL) but seriously the quality of them on the monitor is crappy but I assure you the prints and the original files are much cleaner and crisp. Then I changed to Flickr which helped out a whole lot. Then I started messing with sizing them and the quality sort of went all over the map even with Flickr used as the host. Now I am hosting from my own server space and using bitmap files they are better than anything previous...soon I am going RAW and using DNG and other formats to present my stuff.
So what I am thinking is how do we get the best looking images for posting online without enabling someone to just right click on them download print and then sell on Ebay for example? (See related thread Ebay and Copyright Infringement) What sort of parameters and file sizes and type do we use?

Yep, sounds like what I need to do. Just don't have the tools for watermarks yet, so I will limit what I post. I post mostly my kids playing sports, so I prefer to have some sort of privacy.
I just never realized how easy it was on here.

If someone takes my picture and makes 20 bucks, good on them. They thought of it, and went through the trouble. If it's good enough to get 20 bucks, That mean's it was a good picture, and I'm a good photographer. Go me. Internet = Fair game for all... sad, but true.
300 ppi is a general rule of thumb for a magazine quality photo. So, for an 8x10, you'd need 2400 x 3000 pixels for a great looking photo. I've printed as low as 160 ppi, and I could only start to see pixels when I was looking at the print from an inch away. So an 8x10 at 160 ppi would need to have a 1280 x 1600 source. I usually downsize to 800 pixels on the long edge, so anyone trying to print wouldn't be able to get much bigger than a 3x5 before it started to look bad.I have done lots of film printing but very little digital printing.
