I would pick A over B because I think B is a bit overcooked. I have to say and please don't take this a a negative, I don't really care for either one, you've posted far better work ouside of the critique section.

I appreciate the comment. I'm only considering the finish, not the overall subject matter quality. I believe that I have "run-out" my appeal to HDR.

Actually, the less-than-exciting subject matter adds to the purpose of the poll.

PS.... don't forget to use the poll choices at the top.

Thanks.

HDR is a great tool, but like all tools, not for everything. HDR might be good here, "A" seems kinda flat, even just some tonemapping might bring it to life.

I like "A" better only because it looks more natural than "B". My favorite HDR photos are the ones that don't look all excessive or like an abstract modern art painting. There is a time and place for these excessive HDR's, no doubt, but rendering them highly realistic is cool, too.

Can I ask the purpose of the poll?

Of course. I was working with some photographs that were obviously missing any "wow" factor. Now that I have access to HDR, I believe I have been trying to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear. I don't want to do that. It's the easy way out ( I should be choosing better subjects ). But, I'm not sure, thus the poll. In the end, who knows....

I like A because the colors are truer and softer for the grass and trees. I like the B processing to show detail to bridge construction though.

I fiddle with tonemapping etc mostly to accentuate the details of the object of interest. Sometimes it wrecks the rest of it. I know what you are asking, I think, and B has merit for the bridge detail (which I prefer) but the columns and greenery suffer for it.

This is ALL just personal preference but A is just nicer to look at, for me.

BTW, I like your stuff for what you are going after. It is all interesting and I make sure I look when I know you have posted something.

My thinking was that if you are trying to decide if HDR is better or worse in general, this paticular rendition is not a good representative of how good it can be (to draw a general conclusion from). Too bad we can't post raw files I'd like a crack at it!

I take it this is not a true multiple exposure shot HDR then?

No, it's not for the general question whether HDR is a good tool... I certainly believe it is. The purpose is to decide if mediocrity can be improved enough to make the effort worthwhile.

I'm starting to think this poll is raising more questions than it is answering. :)

I think "A" has allot of potential as a single shot simulated HDR. I wouldn't waste time creating multiple files out of 1 shot though, that's just a waste of time, can't understand why anyone does that.

I think that's where I'm headed. I believe I have gone through some phases....

WOW! HDR!
Try to bracket everything!
HDR everything! Even if it's not camera-bracketed.
Get some good things, get some not so good things.
Try to save some dull photos.
Try to bracket everything.
Choose HDR candidates carefully.
Not everything needs HDR.
HDR can make a photo hokey.
Try to bracket everything.
Choose HDR candidates very carefully.
Don't HDR everything.
Post a poll.

I think I went through the same phases :)

Did you run "A" through phototmatix as a single shot?

Yes. I have been using the single-shot method because of old photos. The bridge, however, was shot yesterday with a small P/S and I was unable to use "real" bracketing. I am discovering that the P/S is for recording history and my D5100 is for creating projects. Of course each is interchangeable as required, as each has its limitations.

I'll just have to figure a way to fit my D5100 in the Photo-Scooter.

Thanks. I'm going to be deleting this post shortly since I have basically obtained my answer.

PS.... I'm now in the last four lines of the phases.
