A new one playing in the bottle brush at the department. I have looked on the web and the only thing I found that is close is the red-billed quelea, which, if correct, is a bird a long way from home. I hope one of the bright kids can confirm or correct me.

I am informed that my guess was wrong -- this is a female pin-tailed whydah, which hales from the same area of Africa, but is now established in Southern California ala pet store escapees.
