how close do you get to the hummers wev? ours dont let you too near

Depending on the spot and the bird, I am usually about 10' away, shooting at 600mm. The one in Post 301 landed on a branch about 5' in front of me and 2' up. I had to slowly shuffle back just to get focus, but it just sat there posing. At that, it is really too close for the lens -- you can see the foreshortening and narrowed DofF. I have found that individual hummers develop favorite territorial landing spots. I can set up at one I know, scaring it off initially, then stand very still with the camera in position, and have it drop back a few minutes later like I wasn't there. Doesn't always work, but often enough.

Odd day -- Santa Ana winds blowing fiercely with lots of dust in the air, bright light or dark shadows, and I just couldn't get square to the lens, if you know what I mean.
