Waist Deep in Mud, A Cautionary Tale!

Today while photographing Pelicans, I was walking along a pond shoreline, and stepped on what looked like a somewhat dried patch of mud. All of a sudden I was waist deep in sticky, heavy mud. (Don't worry, I saved the camera and lens. :) ) I could NOT get myself out. Like quicksand, every move I made only seemed to get me more stuck.

After several minutes of fighting to get out I had made only a small amount of progress and was getting really worn out. Lucky for me another photographer was nearby and by pulling with each of us holding on to the loops of my backpack, he freed me up enough that I was able to get my hands and arms out on more solid ground and sort of crawl my way out.

The mud took one of my boots off and so I had to walk back to my car with only one boot and a thick cover of mud on my pants and remaining boot. LOL. My legs and one knee are really sore from the battle. A photography morning I am not likely to forget!

Glad for a positive outcome. Certainly a warning to be very careful when you are out and about especial if you are alone, thankfully someone was around to help you out.

I've been stuck in the pluff mud around here. It's no fun. Glad you saved the camera. You have to have your priorities straight. I remember twisting my ankle while walking with my new Z8 on a tripod slung over my shoulder earlier this year. All I could think about when falling was to twist to put my body between the camera and the ground. Bruised up my arm and side, but saved the camera. Limped my way through the rest of the morning's shooting.

I misjudged a muddy bog once when I was younger and inexperienced at geocaching. I only was in to my knees, but completely alone and my (flip) phone battery was dead. I had my backpack and it's contents, which included a telescoping aluminum hiking pole. I used that pole to dig and free myself.

I'm glad you got out Woody. :)

YIKES!!! You know that story is gonna grow over time, right? "Remember the time I was in mud up to my chin with an alligator nearby...."
