One of your best. Worthy of being used as a profile pic on facebook but I do have a pretty warped sense of humor.
Me, too! That's a keeper.

BTW, I like the abandoned railroad tracks. I've photographed a lot of them around here. It's a part of history. If we do not record it, it will be lost. That has always been my attitude.

It was the first day of spring, the wind was howling, snow and sun were fighting outside my window, and with as much work as I had to do I knew I wanted to get out and shoot. I figured the wind and clouds made for a great opportunity to try some long daylight exposures. I decided to head to Merrill Creek Reservoir, once of my favorite spots, to see how the wind whipping across the water would look at 3-6 seconds.

On my way out to where I wanted to shoot I captured this, which gives you an idea of what the water surface looked like...

I shot a bunch of stuff, and just need to find the time to get through it. The sun was popping in and out, which made for some great light. Here's a pair that were actually shot into the sun. I loved how the snow in the northern crook of the stump is fighting to hold on as the temps get just north of freezing. The backlighting muted the colors, so I tried black and white and it really popped. I opted for a little more structure in the B&W conversion than in the color.

One more pair from yesterday. I'm finding that the starkness of the day and area makes this very appealing in B&W as well. I also did some "rule breaking" in my long daylight exposing which I stuck in a blog post. At least I think it was rule breaking, but they work for me - or at least it did yesterday.

I love both B&W and color versions. The feeling and impression is different for the B&W images as compared to the color versions. I like them both.

Very cool images, Jake. I love that lake/pond with the old dead trees in it. It looks like a great place for a fertile imagination and a fully charged battery! I'm envious! Have you considered doing a portfolio of images all shot at the same spot near the lake but at different times of the year to capture all the seasons? That might make a really cool time expose.

Thanks, Dave. It's one of my favorite spots to go hiking. There are lots of great spots around it. It used to be a real nice valley until they filled it with water back in 1987, so it's still changing as the trees that survived a while once they finished the dam and flooded it are finally rotting thru and falling.

Hadn't thought about a set of shots through the season, but it's a good idea.

A couple more from today's walkabout. Not sure precisely what this used to be, but it would appear it was a series of large workshops. Whatever it used to be, they weren't afraid of color. LOL

A certain name on the wall made my eyes bug out until I read it correctly. :)

Messing around with the 85mm 1.8g today for the bokeh challenge. Gotta love the sharpness of both the camera (D800) and the lens. And it's nice to be able to sit across the deck with a cigar and a remote while the birds come to you. That's not cheating, is it? LOL

A couple years ago we had a weasel move in to the rock wall along the back of our yard. Didn't make the Mrs. too happy as she would see it drag everything from small rabbits to chipmunk after chipmunk into its lair. After a couple months it seemed to go away. We'd named it "Beelzebub The Weasel Cub" (spoken as "Beezelbub"). Seems the little devil has decided to return, only this time to the hollow of a cherry tree. Don't know if he/she will get a rabbit down in that hole - if they try I only hope I have a camera in my hands and see it.

Cheating, most definitely. If there is one thing I learned from all those art classes was that suffering is a must. Never knew why, but it most definitely was/is required.

Well, it was in the 40's and breezy, so my hands were cold, so there was a little suffering involved.

Love the mailbox shot from the 17th! I too, love to wander and ogle the "lived in", and just now got into the photography mode of observation. Glad I found this thread and look forward to following a similar interest!

What a cute little guy, unless you happen to be the rabbit, chipmunk or other small critter... :)

I was about to head out on the deck yesterday when a Cooper's Hawk came swooping in under the bird feeder looking for dinner and then landed on the branch above it. I tried sneaking out but it bolted immediately. But instead of zooming into the field behind the yard it decided to grab some thermals and soar around the house instead. Lucky me!!
