For quick stuff I use the free Nikon software. When I need more features, I use Photoshop Elements.

Ok, after some research I couldn't find anyone with a D5100 that has my problem. Mostly the same problem occurred with D800 users.

Anyway, I downloaded Nikon Transfer, they don't offer Nikon Transfer 2, from the Nikon website. That works. The only thing it doesn't do is automagically transfer to ViewNX2 which is no big deal.

I also tried to reinstall ViewNX2 since that has Nikon Transfer 2 built in. Nikon Transfer 2 still dumps, but I do like some of the new features of ViewNX2, so I didn't restore my old version.

Thanks everyone who tried to help.
