Great, do the distance tests, it should be interesting. Make TTL do some work. One of us will be surprised. I hope it's not me.
FWIW, AWL Remote mode (for Commander) won't fire, all the foot pins are disabled in Remote mode.
But just ordinary menu TTL mode should still be fired by closing the large center pin, same old way. A paper clip will fire it. It just can't do iTTL that way, cannot respond to TTL commands, it does not know a power level. If its a Nikon flash, I would guess at 1/16 power (like the Test button in TTL mode), but I don't know what level it does. Only know it cannot be controlled by TTL metering if there is no communication path.
