Street photography

Love this one!! Do you not have any issues with going out and shooting people around your area? It's something that I was very conscious of on Saturday when out in the streets, and I'm not sure if my little excursion into the quiet countryside last week made it so (it turned out to be a little more eventful than I anticipated, police called ... resulting in my conclusion that landscape photography is more dangerous than the city streets!)

I am curious to know what the approach (and preparation if applicable) is of those of you who do this sort of candid people-shooting regularly.

No I don't have any issues with going out and shooting people around my area cos I am the only foreigner here and people know me. So they love to get captured an dit is a way to get connected with people.

At other places I go arround with my camera so everyone sees me, after that I take some shots of houses, flowers or something like that. Then I will ask someone If I can take his or her picture. Bystanders showing interest and curiosity what I do. After that I take photos of someone I think is great motion, next I will go to him, her, them and show the photo. I ask if I can show them to my friends on my Blog, Facebook or web-board. 100% so far gave permission.

O.K. some are candid shots too.

Yesterday...coming back from work I walked past many shops selling headscarves/hijab in KL. I was attracted to one shop which had so many hijabs on sale. And this lady, a prospective customer, was so immersed with the hijab on display so much so that she was oblivious to me who was holding a Nikon D7100 aiming at her. This is the best shot that I have obtained. :)

Some really nice shots there Micheal! Street Photography is something that I have been drawn to for a good few years; in fact, I've wanted to try it out for longer than I have actually known anything much about a camera, but even now, it's confidence that has held me back.

Yesterday, thanks to some user stupidity that prompted a trip to get some advice from a camera dealer (don't ask!) I decided it was as good a time as any to give it a try. I have to say I felt a lot more confident as I spent more time out there. Steady drizzle made it tricky being outside but a good lens hood kept the lens dry and a rain sleeve protected the camera.

I came across a really interesting group of guys playing Scottish music with bagpipes and drums. They were surrounded by plenty of onlookers, many of whom were snapping away photos on their phones and point and shoot cameras so I felt a little 'safer' starting out there.

I really enjoyed these and would love to do something similar. Maybe street photography is the way to go for me. Mmmmm …….. (that's me pondering)

Thank you

I have been intrigued with it for several years now but lacked the courage to go out and because I don't really have anyone to go with me it takes a little bit of courage and probably an above average dose of common sense. I stuck with a very busy city center on a Saturday morning despite the rain, because it does attract tourists with 'big cameras' and many more with mobile phones and little point and shoots so I didn't stand out too much. I bought a few coffees to go around (it was a cold day) and took some cash with me to sponsor a few goodwill donations and all was well. I sat and watched these guys where they could see me with the camera for a while so that they knew I was there, then just took a few to see if they looked uncomfortable, but they actually played for the camera a bit. I will take the images on a card next time I go in on a weekend and if I spot them again I will run and get some instant prints done for them

You have to try everything at least once before you can decide if you do or don't like it

Cool photo, like it.

Can anyone see the resemblance to Martins wife (Look, think that was her name) in the John Wayne movie The Searchers? one of the favorite movies as a young pup, Natalie Wood :couple_inlove: aagghh.
