Pat, when you post pictures this size I can't make them any bigger so I can look at them because when I put my pointer over the picture the data screen that pops up and covers the picture and it prevents me from making it larger.
Day 83 - March 24th, 2014..... Cold this morning, down to about 8 deg F... The good news is that latest reports for the winter storm Wed indicate it may miss me!! Hoping

Pat, I see something wrong with these. I don't mean to critic, but would like to lead you to improvement. I think the iso is too low and so is the shutter speed, and (just a suspicion) the VR might be turned on. Am I right? I suspect that when you depress the shutter, the VR hasn't had time to stabilize and is causing some blur, or your shutter speed is simply too slow for these very quickly moving birds. Crop and exposure are right on, but the blur can be improved. With the camera you have, you could bring the iso up to 800 easily without too much loss. And the little you could loose in resolution, you'll gain in crispiness of the birds.
Nice shop shots too.
Marcel, thank you for the critique and suggestions!! That is the best kind of critique, that which offers suggestions and as always, I appreciate it. I actually set the ISO lower than I usually do... so you may well be correct there. I will try those improvements later this week as I will be back to the feeders at least once or twice more. I also appreciate teh feedback regarding crop and exposure.
Curious on the VR, I would have thought I would have wanted it on shooting 300mm hand held. You were correct, it was on and I can see what you are saying... and if the shutter was fast enough, I should not need the VR??? Correct???
Thanks again, constructive criticism can only help me to improve...

I find birds hard to shoot, especially small birds because you have to zoom in so far, and that makes focussing hard.
I found what works for myself, especially for moving birds, is to set ISO to 400 and aperture to biggest the lens will allow and then stick it in aperture priority. On a sunny day this gives you shitter speeds up at 1/1200 or faster and helps to greatly eliminate camera shake. I have VR on of course coz I'm talking hand held![]()
