Rick's Nikon 1 J3 thread

Wow! That's a great comparison of the 3. Nikon 1 works for me because that's the size difference I wanted. From big gun serious to casual with quality. If I had a 4/3, not sure I would have the Nikon 1, but then I'm back to a larger system than the Nikon 1 system. Lol, it's a vicious cycle :)

But did you catch the weight difference? 850g v 497g! That is just the body. Actually a D3300 is slightly lighter but not weather sealed, unable to bracket, etc.

"Easy Pano" mode. You just pan the camera and it creates a pano. Only downside is Jpeg. Will be interesting to try on a train. It has to modes, standard and extra wide, used the 18.5mm (50)

Thanks Chuck! It's really amazing to have a camera the size of a P&S and yet have a raw file you can work with as much as from a DSLR.

Yes it is a wonderment. I love the Nikon 1 series, great cameras in a very small package. The guy holding the camera gets some of the credit too. ;)

I just received my latest batch of prints, one was an 11x14 of the first blue jay shot. It is fantastic, even at a finished sized of only 2.7 MB! I'm integrating some J3 shots into my show stock so we'll see how they sell.

High ISO test. I've been experimenting a bit to see just how high I could go and maintain an acceptable IQ level. 800 is very usable as seen by the last bird shot. Below is a test at 1600, taking advantage of a gloomy overcast morning. The desk pencil holder volunteered to pose as a bird on my bird bath. I decided to shoot and crop/process as normally I would have. The first is the original, second is cropped substantially and processed in LR. I'm pretty impressed,

You really achieved impressive high ISO results, Rick. However, with the new PEN cameras, you would have such quality at 2500 ISO (and a little above that number - I mention this just for the sake of comparison;)). One thing cannot be denied when considering Nikon 1 line-up: they ARE small&handy (unless you're using FT-1 adapter with any of the Nikkor "F" lenses)

Part 2- Getting dark here so I thought I'd push it to ISO 3200. Noise is rearing it's ugly head. LR did a pretty good job, but I wouldn't be able to use the images for anything serious. I guess 1600 is the usable upper limit. Annoying that there is no choice between 800 and 1600. I was however very impressed with the VR, about 300mm equivalent, handheld at 1/60th.

For closure I've sold the J3 and have decided to get a V2 as my "casual" camera (the V3 specs are a disappointment). Built in grip and viewfinder will be a big improvement. I've also purchased the f1 adapter for my other Fx glass, really looking forward to see how the 70-200 f4 works on the V2 with a FOV of 190-540mm. I'll start a new V2 thread as soon as the new toys arrive :).
