First real day of shooting with the D500. 1800 shots, mostly birds. The focusing hit rate on birds in flight seems significantly better than the D7200. Most of the missed were my fault. It got some birds in focus that I never would have thought possible on prayer shots. It's not perfect, though. There were some misses on shots that the camera did not track from shot to shot.
The focusing system is better on stationary subjects, too. I especially noticed on dark birds with no contrasting colors, for instance.
