Rant Of The Day

I have to agree with the OP. Not every image is worthy of the HDR treatment. It is way over used and many of the images do look like crap.

Especially, the ones that are one image and Photoshopped. HDR needs to be done properly for an image to look great and on certain textures, lighting and subjects get enhanced by the HDR look.

Not everything looks great in HDR!

Do I duck and run for cover now.... :)

I think we all agree on most of that. HDR has it's place. All post processing techniques can be overdone, they can all help or hurt, just like HDR.

BUT...,To say it is not photography is absolutely ridiculous.

And, just to be clear, I never said that! :)

HDR is photography.

As is any image that has Photoshop, Lightroom, Capture NX2 (which every Nikon owner should be using), Nik FX software etc applied to them. Photographs have been manipulated since the process was invented. Teeth have been added (kids missing teeth) to smiles for as long as I can remember, red eye removed, etc etc.

I used to have a darkroom and I can't tell you how many times I dodged and burned an image to make it look right, applied heat with my hand during the developer process to get more development to an area etc. This made the photo different than the image on the negative. Digital is no different.

The end result, what you print or post IS Photography.

True, multi-image HDR is every bit photography as is a snap from a pin hole camera. Saying otherwise is simply silly. Whether or not you like it is another story and everyone is entitled to their opinion.

Art, I was refering to the original post which started this thread, my apology for any confusion :)

Rick, no worries, I knew you were not referring to me. It wasn't clear in the post so I wanted to make sure. You can tell from my post, we are both on the same page! Thanks!! :)

Trey Ratcliff does very nice work. I agree that every photo does not have to be an HDR, but sometimes they are very nice to look at.

We shall agree to disagree. HDR is not the process of photography, it is a post process.

[h=2]Definition of PHOTOGRAPHY[/h]: the art or process of producing images by the action of radiant energy and especially light on a sensitive surface (as film or an optical sensor)

I don't think you can just leave it at that. The image you capture isn't even visible until you process it chemically with film or on computer with DSLR's. It would be kind of a boring hobby/profession if all we did was capture images that no one could ever see. The photography definition above makes no mention of what we do/ how we process the captured image. If I adjust the saturation or sharpness (or whatever) more or less than one of you , is one of us not a photographer?
While I agree there is a lot of over the top images out there that I don't care for, there are others I wish I had shot. The definition of photography shows that it is a science. But making photographs then has to be an art and in art there are no rules. Clearly to me they aren't the same thing.

...post processing techniques can be overdone...

I've learned quite a lot about post-processing this week. I was thinking to enter this one for the elements challenge... what do you guys think? :p

There's 2 statements here that i agree with - Stangmans and slowpoke. To me, HDR is the new fad. Unfortunately, amateurs take fads to extremes [ like a teenager with a fast hatchback who buys every accessory under the sun from The Motorists Custom Shop ]...and the photos end up making me feel ill. Just like those cars. Subtle works better, depending on the photo, and the bridge pic from newb is one of those. Heavy would be Ricks big machinery HDR's but they also work because of the subject matter, and talent at HDR'ing a photo properly

On the other hand, if someone wants to over do the HDR till the cows come home, then great if they like it. No one else has to. It aint for me cos i hate feeling sick, but to dismiss is ending up in the tired old debate of personal taste and what one likes, another doesnt. I just give those heavy handed obviously amateurish HDR's a miss

Whether someone likes HDR or not is completely subjective. Not everyone likes apple pie and baseball, either. To go so far as to say it's not even photography? Well, that's something else. HDR is just another post-processing technique, and those who attempt to turn it into some kind of purist debate are usually the same ones who lack any real skill or creativity in the first place.

HDR is just a tool, some know how to use it and some don't. I never cared for Elvis and never bought any of his albums but I realized his talent.

So take your image.Make a copy of it,and work on the second one. After you finish your changes, inhansments, etc.Put the first image
beside the HDR and compare. This is fun.You wish to share, please do.If I don't like your HDR,I will just turn the page. It's not up me to judge your pictures. You should see mine.lol I'm having fun hope you are too.

If you don't like Apple pie, Baseball and Elvis then you need to leave the planet right now!!!

My take on HDR.. I have seen a few that really look great. Has to be the correct subject, shot the correct way and not overdone. Just enough to make it really popl You should have to say to yourself "Is that HDR?"

I just went from 4GB of memory in my computer to 8GB today so I am ready to try HRD using RAW files.
