Rant Of The Day

Ok. Here is my rant for today. It's going to have to do with HDR. STOP IT! Stop HDR'ing every photo that you take. It looks like crap when you do that. HDR is fine for certain photos. Not every single one that you shoot. I think that 99% of HDR looks like crap. I am not a fan. I don't consider it photography. I have seen some amazing HDR, that said, it is very limited to the type/content that should be HDR. There are a ton of photos out there that are amazing before you started jacking around and turning into an HDR.
Rant over.

I actually have to agree with the statement that "a lot of HDR looks like crap". I have seen some really well done ones, but I am not a fan of the "halo" effect that it produces In a lot of cases. That being said, I don't really care what someone else does with their picture, if I don't like it i just don't do it myself.

Don't be like that. There are a lot of shots that I like. And I wasn't ranting about the people here. I am talking about the internet and HDR as a whole :) Please don't be mad at me dear!

There is really only a handfull of us HDR junkies on here, yet we seem to post a high percentage of pics, I wonder why? It's just another post processing tool, like color, cropping, toning, ect. I find photoshoping things to death to be destructive, but it is still art and photography to the artist.

I find that people, animals, flowers anything moving are bad subjects.

Vehicles, buildings, landscapes, machinery, trains, heavy equipement are all good material.

Im going to put my 2 cents in. I too only like certain pics in hdr. When I started doing it myself I experimented with it. Last year when I had my postcards done I did them hdr style. But not enough to blow out the picture. Here is an example. You dont have to go overboard.

Rick's HDR work is very good. He is a good seasoned photographer period. I bet he can make a mean picture in the regular fashion too. He uses more tools than just a camera, lenses, and software. He uses a CP and a tripod too. He has untold hours of experience and has learned what works best for him. He is serious about HDR that is why is stuff is a cut above. I hope someday I will be as good at portraits as he is at HDR.

Thanks Jeff! Actually about half my stuff is not HDR, as in my 10-24 thread, it's 50/50. Like you said, we all find what works best for us, it just takes time to get there.

Yeah but you have to admit some of your best stuff is HDR sir...or at least I think so. :)

I have about 10-12 enlargements in my office at work. Everyone who comes in loves the HDR and look past the standard exposures. People are more drawn to the color and depth of HDR. Enlarged and printed they pop off the wall, people ask if they are some kind of 3D images.

I believe it...the only problem you have now is how are you going to surpass these images you already have? haha :)

I have to agree with the OP. Not every image is worthy of the HDR treatment. It is way over used and many of the images do look like crap.

Especially, the ones that are one image and Photoshopped. HDR needs to be done properly for an image to look great and on certain textures, lighting and subjects get enhanced by the HDR look.

Not everything looks great in HDR!

Do I duck and run for cover now.... :)
