Question for FX nikon users!

I think my search ended. I tried my 10-24mm DX on the FX and it was terrible and required loads of work and some cropping to get the good part out. The problem was I shot at 10mm.

It's raining outside so I was goofing around with it and noticed that when I ignore the 10mm and go up, it's not so bad. I put it in FX mode, vignetting and distortion control on in the cam. Then in LR, I use the lens corrections and vignetting to the best. Here are some shots at different lengths. Vignetting is still a bit of an issue in all but I can work that out in LR. I cut my landscapes to 16/9 or 16/10 most of the time so I just need to center it right.

Around 16/17 it does a well enough job for a DX on an FX.

Of course my choice will be strictly regulated by prices. So it will take awhile before I end up with a wide angle lens. :(

Bill repeating from the other thread but I highly recommend you seriously look at fast (f2.8) Nikkor MF Ai or Ai-s glass on the wide side.....KEH usually has a nice supply of 24 f2.8 and 20 f2.8 lenses......you don't need the AF for the wide at your skill level, my 28 f2.8 focuses like a rocket and all functions of the D700 are bang on in M or A mode......

I have rekindled my love for this lens.....had it years ago on my F/F2 Nikon SLR's and it is even better on the D700, can not recommend enough.....if my eye dials back in the wide view of things I may spring for a 20 and 24 down the road. I will of course continue to cruise the yards sales and local craigslist as always. Don't need no super high $$ zoom my feet work fine....

:)

I'm also keeping my mind open on MF lenses, and I do have a 28mm even though it's AF Nikkor buddy. :)
I'm also considering a 20mm since the price on it can be found in the realm of possibility for me. Lol :)
I tend to be a prime fan, but I'm trying not to close my mind on zooms that hit the focal ranges that seem like they might work good for me! :D

If you dont shoot wide open or near open apertures, you have a lot more options.

-take a lot into a used 17-35 AFS (aprx $800)

-I use the Tamron 17-35 2.8-4. in my opinion on par with the nikon and bests it by a bit, although I hadnt gotten around to do a side by side tripod test. focus is EXTREMELY fast. lens is not made anymore and can be had used for around $350. very nice lens. build quality is like the older 18-35 3.5-4.5D

take a look here
https://www.mediafire.com/folder/knhqkuak1x86g/17-35_tamron_vs_nikon
I did some non technical shots of the nikon and tamron 17-35. took the lens from my friend while we were at the hair salon the bride was getting her done at. it was handheld but at very high shutter speed so while its not technically perfect it still says something.

-Sigma 20mm 1.8. needs to be stopped down a bit

-nikon 20-35 AFD 2.8 built like a tank, needs to be stopped down

-Sigma 17-35 2.8-4

-older 18-35 3.5 4.5

-Excellent Tokina 16-28 2.8. be aware the lens was designed to be sharper towards the wide end then the 28mm end. I was ready to pull the trigger but saw a review noting this and since I use the 20-28mm (every lens distorts people extremely wider than 24mm) more, I had to say no. $650 new

-I personally am waiting for the new Tamron 15-30 2.8 VC lens to be released. they just announced it in Photokina and man am I psyched. dying to see a test on it and price. I have a feeling it will beat the nikon 14-24. I think tamron will undercut everyone and price it around $1100.

Hey Bill I have a Rokinon 14mm/2.8 and a Sigma 12-24. Since I bought the Sigma, my Rokinon has been not used. I'll send you a PM as I was planning to list it when I return from vacation after Thanksgiving.

Some great information in here. Thanks for asking this question... I asked a similar one a few days ago, but the replies here are great!

When you say a 20mm may be in your price realm, are you talking about an AF lens or a MF lens? If you are considering a 20mm f/2.8 AF-D, please PM me a price you would consider.

I read it has quite some distortion on the 16mm. Too much to fix in PP. Is that your experience too? Whatever I'd buy, I'd mainly be using the short end.

I've not found anything that seems off and unfixable on the 16mm end of mine. Perhaps if you were to stick a human face in front of it, but in terms of nature and architecture I've had no issues whatsoever.

Here are two copies of the same image shot with the 16-35mm at 16mm. The first is without Lightroom Profile Correction, and the second with. No other edits whatsoever. I can't find much in the way of distortion in the second, but if I did I suspect I could correct it fairly easily in Photoshop.

It looks like I may have a ultra-wide lens coming to play with, but eventually I imagine I'll want a zoom in the wide angle lens nitch, like the sigma 12-24mm or something like it. I have a Nikkor AF 28mm d lens, and I have a 14mm ultra-wide coming, and I also may have a Nikkor AF 20mm d lens coming if things works out. :)

I'm wondering if these will cover the wide and ultra-wide needs, or if they will lack some need I'm not aware of?

Any opinions, or thoughts?

If you're getting the 14mm Vivitar, Samyang, ProOptic, Bower, Opteka, Bell & Howell, Rokinon, Falcon or Walimex (some of the various trade labels the lens is sold under) be aware of the extreme mustache (compound) distortion. I toyed with one once, and found I could correct it, but I ended up with the FOV of a 16mm lens.... too close to my 17-35mm to be of much value.

It's a Rokinon 14mm. But I don't have a 17-35mm at this time.

If you are using Lightroom, you might be interested in these lens profiles. In my limited experience they worked very well.

I don't recall seeing this image previously unless I missed it somewhere. Makes me want to ask if you're holding out on us, Jake! ;) Nice example of how LR's lens correction works.

I don't have lightroom, but maybe my postprocessing program has something to do the same job! Hopefully! Lol :)
