We use the same camera Pat :) This was with my 70-300 f/4.5

I shoot "S" (shutter priority) mode and try to keep it at 1/250 sec or faster shoot mostly wide open to blur backgrounds.

Ok, that makes sense... I have been AP as the 2 excursions I have had were both a bit short on light.. (I do tend to be in AP mode more often than not anyway...) I need to get out and try it in a good bright light day...

We may be using the same camera but my skills (only owned my dslr for a couple months) cannot compare to yours or most of the regulars here. And thats ok by the way, I am learning and having fun doing it!! The more I shoot, the more I see improvements in both my knowledge and my abilities...

As always, thank you for sharing your settings etc... That is one of the great things here, the willingness of so many to offer help and/or answer questions.

I learned from others on this site that the D5100 seems to like higher shutter speeds to get a really good sharp picture. With such a sensitive sensor it makes sense. And the fact I always hand hold for these street portraits. It helped a great deal and I'm happy to pass this tip on to you Pat. Try it :)

I'll use the ISO or shutter speed to get to the f/stop I want but really try to keep the shutter speed pretty fast as much as possible.
