Who would have thought there would be a guy with a sombrero getting on my plane (I think it may be the Frito Bandito)

I just have a few questions Rick. Most of these people seem to be aware that you are taking a shot at them. Do you talk to them before or afterwards to let them know of your project? Or do you just shoot and run? How do they react ? Do you get many angry looks?

I find your project very interesting and you will end up with a very nice image bank. Best of luck for the rest of your project.

Typically I start by looking for a place with good foot traffic of a lot of people going to and fro. I then look for a spot with open shade to get soft lighting. I then look for a spot where I can be close to the people walking by but a place to lean against a wall or pole so I can be steady. I either use my 70-300 VR or my 18-200 VRII. I look for someone interesting from a bit of a distance walk in my direction and start watching them through the viewfinder as they get closer and closer. If they are interesting and the lighting is not too harsh I'll start shooting and continue to follow that person as they get closer and closer to me. At a point they notice me and that is where I get that eye contact and I know I got the shot. I want them to notice me and get that engagement. Some people acknowledge me, some do not. Some chat and ask me what I'm shooting for and have a conversation, some just walk on by. A very few ask me not to shoot them but not get angry. If someone asks me not to shoot them I stop.

If it's kids like the two babies I shot a month ago or so I asked the mom's permission to shoot and got their email sent them the pictures and asked if I could post them before I did. There was someone not too long ago who was a homeless lady. As I walked by I gave her a few dollars and asked if she minded if I shot pictures of her. Then I got about 15 feet away but close enough to chat. As we chatted and she interacted with people walking by I shot a series of pictures with 2 good ones in the end. She was a great and interesting person with a very unique perspective.

Most often people see me know what I'm doing give me a look right into the lens but just walk on by. There are a few spots which I go to on a semi regular basis. In those spots I'm getting to know the locals and be a part of that environment.

A peek into the glamorous life of business travel.

Get to the airport and head to the gate...

Notice something doesn't look quite right - waiting passengers have a zombie-like look on their faces...

sm3312.jpg

Look at the departure board to check flight times ... and ...

sm3313.jpg

the reality sets in. 2 flights out of 13 leaving on time, of course mine was not one of the on time flights and settled in for a 2 hour delay. Got in at 1 am PST which made it 3am CST the time zone I woke up in and worked all day in ;(

Santa Ana Windy Spring Day

This means the planes landing pattern changes to my neighborhood as the landing path and by the time they get to my part of the street they are SUPER low. (This is shot with a 70mm)

But the spring flowers don't mind at all :)

Wow, the Graffiti artists are everywhere. They even tagged that plane.
