Day One Hundred Fifty Three

Saw this little lady in a pet shop. The owner brought her around for all to see (had my grandkids with me). She was a bright green in the tank, but was just starting to change when the pet shop lady put her on the arm. It was funny because she backed away from men, but would eagerly move to another ladies arm. And to think, I took a bath and brushed my teeth for that kind of treatment

First signs of new life in our cantelope garden. To be totally honest, the garden is simply a pot on the deck that my wife dropped some cantalope seeds into.

Snowball was our touring again. Had to lean out the LR window to get this one. Tried to make some noise to get her to turn, but it only spooked her into the woods.

Today we have a view of the front walk for one of the dorms from the Original University of Virginia. These rooms are where the first students lived. One of the rooms is open for viewing because it was where Edgar Allen Poe lived prior to dropping out ( he went broke from gambling losses). There are 54 rooms and are reserved for undergrad seniors who apply and are added to the waiting list. I've heard prestige at the school has a lot to do with acceptance. They are about 12x12 in size and have no real facilities other than a sink. Shower and WC are located nearby.

Of course I couldn't let the day go without today's shot of Snowball.

Mike that's Chameleon. I can tell just by the feet, now what kind it is I don't know.

This morning's impromptu moon shot (only had the 18-55 with me but had to try) actually turned out to be my best shot of the day.

2012-157.jpg

Now this brings me to a question. I've seen a number of moon shots where the moon is enormous. It is usually presented along with a building or a tree in the same photo. Can this be done with a normal shot using a lot of distance and a very long lens? Is it a double exposure or is photoshop involved. My vote is photoshop.

I remember Pete saying in a moon thread that it helps to stand on a chair because you're closer that way.

Mike I know that living in "Flat Land" Illinois and in the country, when the moon rises a the horizon level it is much bigger than it is hours later.

My guess the pictures you talking about were taken right at moon rise with a long lens.

Sure there is some Photoshop involved but for the most part it's the real deal and I don't think people are Photoshopping things in as much as you think they are, not saying it can't be done.

Neighbor was trying to restore the headlight lenses on his wife's car. The brand he bought isn't working too well. I can't remember the brand I got from my son in law last year, but it really worked on my car. I'm gonna make sure the neighbor gets the good stuff next time.

Personally, I like to get shots out of the way early. Then I have something to pick from. Not today. Too busy at work and then grocery store afterward. I figured I could try some late night stuff of stars or light painting or stuff. I went out onto the deck to check possible setups while it was still light and noticed these two critters. Good chance to slap on the 105 and snap a few.

I had the hardest time with this one's wings. I had the setting sun to my back and the bright yellow wings just totally washed out. Even with that, I like this picture.

This one didn't turn out too shabby. The plant was a bit shaded from the direct sun so it wasn't washed out.

Decided to practice for a little sparkle tonight. After all, the July 4th celebrations are less than a month away. I used about a dozen sparklers and experimented with F-stops and shutters. F-stop had very little effect. Shutter speeds did. Faster speeds captured a much simpler burn. Slower speeds filled in better.

This shot was using the 105mm from about 2 feet away
F-4.0 at 1/60 sec.
ISO was 100
cropped the garbage out with Lightroom

The way I capture fire works and lightning is I set the camera to bulb, ISO 200, F16-F22. Manual focus on an object closer to you, tilt the camera up toward where the fireworks will go off. When the rocket is going up hold your remote switch until its done exploding. With it in manual you dont have to worry about AF trying to lock on. Make sure you use a tripod though. With lightning I hold my remote switch down for 20 seconds. If nothing happens in that time frame I reset and do it again.

Simple little volunteer flower. This is a pot the wife didn't plant this year. Mostly wild stuff growing from the seed scatter at the bird feeder. I saw the purple tinge and pushed the weeds away to find this little beauty.

I'm not really happy with putting up another photo of snowball, but she's all I have this evening. Besides, the rarity of an Albino groundhog merits multiple shots. She was in the back yard when I got home, and let me snap a few shots before going under the fence and off into the woods.

A little excitement into an otherwise beautiful day in our neighborhood. Not sure exactly what but a neighbor's garage caught fire. No one inside at the time. Of course the hometown heros (Fire/Police/Rescue) were promptly on the scene and took care of matters. Needless to say, no traffic allowed in or out until it was over. It's not over yet, but the cleanup has started. Another hour and they should be gone.

By the way. The first shot was as close as the police would allow me to get.
