When I first saw the picture it said to me in a very loud voice that I need to be more cautious at school crossings.

I think back in my mind that was the point I was trying to make. I agree, there is no saving this shot and it does need to be recomposed. Only had one shot at this one it's really a busy street and we really didn't want him walking back and forth a lot. I think I was more worried about his safety and rushed everything and should have thought it out more.

What you need to do, Rick, is lay on the ground and shoot up at Tyler as he walks towards you. Get right in his path and wait until he's almost right on top of you to take your shot. I think that will be exactly what you're looking for.

<smuglook> With a D500 you can place it on the curb and rotate the LCD in Live View and take the shot with a remote so you don't soil your clothes laying on the ground. :) </smuglook>

Just another lazy Sunday afternoon

So you got one of those too --- I used to have a padded rocking chair in my office until our Pom The Princess Koko claimed it as part of her domain. ;)

Dog food is the cheap part for us. It's the treats and toys that is breaking us. Her nickname is "Shredder" because of all the toys she has shredded. Also she knows her drawer where the treats are kept and no matter what room in the house she may be when she hears that drawer open -- she is there. :)

Try having three 70+ lb Dogs. I have to go by the bank this afternoon for a loan so I can get some more food for them.

I feel your pain. I have a Boston Terrier (which were originally bred to be pit fighters) who has destroyed every single toy he's ever come into contact with. He's now 4 years old, and there has only ever been 1 toy that has survived more than a few days: The Kong Extreme. It has to be the black version, not the red...which is for "normal" chewers.

Day 267
Walk a mile in my shoes #3

Rain kept me inside tonight so downstairs working late in the studio. Not bad for a DIY with light bulbs. Oh well, someday I'll be rich and famous and have real lighting.

NO. I have two of those. We also have a red female, who by the way is going to have another litter. That should help the NAS fund a little:p Of course I'm sure what I spend in dog food in a year I'm still losing money

My son had a terrifying moment two weeks ago while we were hiking in Colorado when he came face to face with this yawning Grizzly Bear just waking up from a nap -- fortunately he had the sense to snap a picture with his cellphone before getting shredded. Luckily my wife had the wild bear in her baby carrier or who knows what may have happened. :)

Not too shabby at all, sir!

Be patient, you'll get there. I remember toiling away in the basement with shop lights too, dude. I still break out the ole shop lights on occasion when I don't have enough lighting...those pesky white backdrops can be a pain in the ass.

You're lucky in that Christine shares your photography interest. Maybe Santa will come early this year?

Thanks Anthony, not shop lights. I used 3 clip on reflectors (the kind that look like an UFO with a clip) with three different watt GE Reveal light bulbs instead of tungsten bulbs.

Copied from GE web site:

GE Reveal bulbs make colors "pop" in a way they don't with standard incandescent bulbs. Why? The rare earth element neodymium that's in the glass. (It's what gives these bulbs their distinctive blue color when unlit.) When these bulbs are lit, the neodymium provides a pure, clean light by filtering out much of the dulling yellow cast common from ordinary light bulbs.

The reveal bulbs due help cut down on the yellow, this shot still took a good size white balance adjustment on the RAW file to knock down the yellow.

No diffusers are in front of the bulbs right now I have to make some that should help soften up the lighting a little.

Without dumping a lot of money into this light project, I like to add dimmers to each light to control each light independently a little more.

If Santa does come early this year, he better have a least one piece of fast glass in his bag, or he may find himself tied up in my basement studio being held hostage.:p

Here's the RAW file converted to JPG before any adjustments, I had my work cut out for me.

Well, I can help you out a bit with that one, Rick...

Most tungsten light bulbs have a color temperature of around 2600K. According to my research, those GE Reveal bulbs are coming back with results in the 2800-2850 range. That's a bit cooler, but still nowhere near enough to producing the results you're looking for.

"Pure" white lighting is 5500-5600K. The good news is, you can pick up Daylight CFL (those little curly Q bulbs) at just about any Lowes, Home Depot, or even Wal Mart. Just look for the Daylight label, and some brands even put the color temperature on the package. These bulbs come in 50/60/75/100/150 watt equivalents depending on the max rating for your lights. I used the El Cheapo shop light housings because they can go up to 150w, and are still very inexpensive.

Your boy crossing the street is a great shot, Rick. Maybe try something a little more conceptual by breaking the rules. This is where my eyes and mind go to when I look at your photo.

Thanks Anthony, funny your research on the Reveal bulbs comes back in the 2850 range. If I'm not mistaken that's what my white balance color correction was, and as you know that is still way far to the left on the blue side.

I'm going to have to pick me up a couple sets of those day light bulbs on the way home tonight and try, rain back in the forecast again.

I like using 3 different watt bulbs to mimic a true 3 light set up. Even with my highest bulb at 100 watts, last night my camera on auto was only shooting at f4.6 if I remember right. I took a lot of shots at different settings and on auto to see what the camera liked.

Thanks for Helene for the crop, that's really close to what I had in mind, but like I said earlier in this thread, quality wise there is no saving the photo it needed to be redone if I chose to use this idea in this weeks challenge, the weather is not working with me right now and I have been forced back inside. I would like to revisit this shot and will keep your crop and everyone's input in mind, thank you and everyone for all your help.

Day 267
Crash and burn

Well really bombed out today. I always take a backup photo for my 365 in case I can't find anything or don't have time. Such is the case today, so here a filler shot of some flying ants I found on the way out the door tonight running out for some errands that took longer than I thought they would.
