Pretzel's learning curve...

Ok, try #2. (sometimes the attachments in this forum get my goat)

The last of my sunrise photos that remind me of the short poem I wrote, simply titled "Florida".

Florida...

I yearn
to return

1st, a shot I took from the back door (did I mention it had BEACH ACCESS?) from our 1 night staying on the beach.

Sunrise13.jpg

Then a couple of shots of my wife and son using the "rent-a-lounges" long before anyone even thought about showing up to collect the rent. ;)

Sunrise6.jpg

Sunrise7.jpg

Then, the obligatory "Palms at Sunrise" photos...

Sunrise9.jpg

Sunrise8.jpg

Tomorrow, I'll start working on some edits for the birds I managed to capture that were NOT gulls and pelicans. LOL

Love the prose.

Spending at least one night at a residence or hotel on the beach should be mandatory. You did right! I may have missed it, but where were the beach photos taken?

Some, along the Broadwalk (like the sunrise photos) were taken off of Hollywood Beach. The rest were at a State Park near Dania Beach.

Hi Pretzel, so am i right in thinking that you have only used the kit lenses for all of this project......

For many of them, yes, but toward the end of the pics, I also started using my 70-300 on a few (like a lot of the Florida close-ups and moon shots).

Well, ok... maybe it's NOT birds yet, but my wife spotted this "blood" moon rising low over the horizon, so we flew home to get the camera, then I hustled down to a local church parking lot to catch a shot before it rose too high, as it was getting smaller, whiter and brighter with every passing moment. Not sure what gave the red/orange tint, but there was a haze over our area all day. Ozone alert? Grass fire? Who knows? I just know I caught a good shot of the moon looking like Nacho Cheese Doritos!

Whatever the haze was, it caused a bit of shape distortion, and I definitely had to test my skills as it definitely took settings different than what I was used to using for the moon recently. Plus, thought I'd mess with double clicking an image and setting it to full size for once. ;) Of course, it's only "full size" for the forum, not the actual size I can see on the iMac.

Ok, ok... now a few of the birds I've been promising. ;)

1st, a Canadian Ringneck Dove (or so I was told) that decided to get up close and personal on our motel balcony.

BOF1.jpg

BOF2.jpg

Then a couple of wild conures that visited the top of a palm right outside our hotel door.

BOF3.jpg

And a blackbird that visited just below our balcony.

BOF4.jpg

While I was wandering the broadwalk, I found this feather from a previously visiting feathered friend, and thought it would make a cool shot against the wonderfully textured walk.

BOF5.jpg

Then, on the way back to the room, I spotted this poor little fellow... rough, beat up, missing all of his toes, but enjoying the warmth of the sun just like all the rest.

We call these Collared Doves. The green ones are Monk Parakeets and the last one without tootsies is a female Grackle. But you knew that already, right??

I definitely should have been able to spot the Grackle, since I watch them all the time, but she was so beat up and tattered, I absolutely missed it!

Went to help mom move an antique desk and some paintings today, and we stopped at Brownies Hamburgers (a place mom says she started eating at nearly 50 years ago) for some cheeseburgers, onion rings, homemade root beer and some of the best pie this side of anywhere.

Brownies1.jpg

Anyway, as I learn to take my camera EVERYWHERE, I happened to spot a friendly face across the restaurant with near perfect lighting from the window, so I ambled over, introduced myself, and asked if she would mind if I snapped her photo for my "100 Strangers" project. We chatted for about 5 minutes about everything from cameras, to Tulsa, to Brownies and more, and then agreed to let me snap the pic I wanted. I ended up getting to meet quite a few folks, told them about my FaceBook page where I share my work, and even bought a guy a piece of pie *NINJA* style. When he thanked me, I just told him to pay it forward, and I left with a smile... Now, the question for you is - which edit of Barbara do you like best?

1st is the original photo (1/200, f5.6, ISO 400 at 300mm) that I left a little underexposed on purpose so I could get a safe shutter speed for a handheld shot. (We ALL know it's easier to fix underexposure than focal blur, right?) Then, there are the 3 quick crop/edits I churned out. Any ideas/suggestion other than what I've done? Do you think it should be cropped at all? I'm open to anything, as remember, this is my "Learning Curve" thread. :)

I like the slightly muted color of this one.

I also got this pic, my 2nd favorite, as it epitomizes how I felt after getting to spend a few minutes chatting with this wonderful soul!

A few more birds of Florida before I try to wrap up the vacation pics... :)

A glimpse of the hard to catch "red head" just over the top of a utility pole.

BOF7.jpg

Luckily for me, the fruit he had in mind was near at hand, so I got a better shot of him before he buried his head in "lunch"...

BOF8.jpg

Then, the day I spotted the frigate birds, I saw this little damsel, apparently in distress on the beach. I thought perhaps one of the "sky pirates" had attacked her but couldn't finish her off before she fell out of range.

BOF11.jpg

Turns out she was just catching some warming sun, though, as this colorful fellow flew over quickly to warn her of danger (read: big bald guy with camera) and rousted her from her resting place, all the while staying between her and the tourist. ;)

This was, by far, my fave picture of the trip. I've edited so many times, this is the "current" result. My boy being a boy...

Had such a FANTASTIC day! Day off in the middle of the week, so decided to take the boy to the zoo and have some dad/son time and a chance to get some pics. It was HOT! 86 and humid when we got there, 94 by the time we left, but that combined with Wednesday meant we saw about 12 other people there the whole day. Made it nice! The MAIN priority was me and the boy, but I had the chance to shoot a few pics too... A lot of the animals were hiding out in the heat, and quite a few were inside buildings, so I was cranking the ISO to get handheld shots with the 70-300.

Here's a few of 'em for your enjoyment, and I'll upload more in the days to come. As always, I'll try to save what I feel is the best for last, LOL.

"Zoo: a project in black and white"

These guys were worn out from the heat, but a little patience FINALLY earned me a shot at one that came out to grab a bite for lunch... This is the only edit that I'm not FULLY satisfied with, as I need to get rid of some of that open space at the top, but I'm tired! ;)

Zoo5.jpg

I've always loved the big parrots, and this large scarlet was a beauty.

Zoo13.jpg

I never spotted the sign that told me which bird this was, but it stared at us with one unblinking eye the whole time!

Zoo12.jpg

These fellows were allowed to roam free inside the rainforest exhibit (as were the two birds above), so I caught a few shots of different ones here and there. I'll add a couple more tomorrow.
