Wonder if Fed-Ex ever gets ticked off about excited novice photographers trying to track their new lens 20 times daily in the hopes it's ahead of schedule?

Got to enjoy a nice ride 2-up with the wife tonight, enjoying the local riverfront... and of COURSE, I had my camera along to shoot the river scenery, people, sunset, etc. Even "practiced" on a few with the wife, but she hasn't given me "permission" to post any yet (something about hair blown askew from riding a motorcycle). :D

Here's a couple of the pedestrian bridge that crosses the entire river to start while I mess with crops and edits. The one that looks like I was hovering over the water (side shot) was actually taken from the ramp that goes down to the fishing pier just down river from the low water dam.

Here's a few more of "couples" along the river. For some reason, I've straightened that 1st pic a few times, and it keeps coming up skewed. Perhaps I'm just sleepy!

Riverside1.jpg

Got lucky to catch this quick moment of affection on the fishing pier.

Couple2.jpg

I REALLY loved the colors in this last pic, from her hair to his shirt. Throw in the river and greenery in the background and I was hooked.

I'll throw up a few pics of the sunset and a couple of "testers" from the wife (SHHHHH!) tomorrow. ;)

2 a.m., and the lens is just 2 hours away on the highway here. It *WILL* arrive a day ahead of schedule!! :) Better go to sleep so "Christmas in July" comes faster! LOL

I saw the Fed Ex truck stopping at my house this morning and got so excited till I realized I did not have anything on order anywhere. It was something for my wife.

Color me disappointed :miserable:

Wow... Really didn't expect it to be this much of a size difference! (Not that I mind, it looks fantastic!) Here's an iPhone pic I took, as soon as I got it, with the kit 18-55 beside it for reference.

PLUS test pics coming in just a moment!

Here's a few test shots I made in limited time, just to test out the performance. Also cropped to near 1:1, no other editing. (Also messing with a higher ISO to test the noise factor. I'm quite pleased!)

1) About 6 feet away, 300mm, ISO 1600, 1/320 and 5.6 aperture

70-300-4.jpg

2) About 15 feet away, 240mm, ISO 1600, 1/4000 and 5.6 aperture

70-300-3.jpg

3) About 30 feet away, 300mm, ISO 1600, 1/500 and 5.6 aperture

70-300-2.jpg

4) About 60 feet away, 300mm, ISO 1600, 1/800 and 5.6 aperture

70-300-1.jpg

QUITE pleased with the very fast, out of the box performance. The flower and the pooch were camera in hand, the other two were on a tripod.

Now that I'm done playing, I'll post the sunset pics from yesterday's river pics... tomorrow. ;)

As mentioned before (with the crane shots earlier in this thread), I love to go down to a local park on lunch and watch/listen to the Great-tailed Grackle. It just so happens that THIS time, they were a bit more photogenic. ;) That combined with my new 70-300 VR nabbed me a few pics.

1st, all the other laddies seen a bit later were all in an uproar over this one little brown lass. It was quite comical to watch them strut and listen to the whistles and cries!

GrackleLady.jpg

This fellow did all his struttin' from afar, trying to lure the lass away.

Grackle1.jpg

This fellow never actually landed on the ground, and judging by his lack of tail feathers, I'm assuming it's because he's lost a "few" challenges. He was sure callin' and fluffin' from the fence, though...

Grackle2.jpg

This was the stud that ended up winning the day. He made sure he was out in the full sun so the lass could see all of his blue-black glory!

Grackle3.jpg

All that jive and dance for naught, this dejected fellow retreated to the creek for a drink and some shade...

The second batch are really nice. The ones in post #94 seem to have a little bit of a yellowish or greenish cast. Was that because of the light? Just curious.

...and although this pic didn't come out quite as sharp as the others, this is the winning stud in full strut/fluff. He was durn full of himself today, and it paid off!

*blush* I was still set on "shade" white balance from sunset shooting the night before, and was rushing to get in some pics to test out the new lens while I could. That made it shoot a little yellower/warmer than I wanted.

i figured it was something like that, especially with a new camera.

In fact, here's the little lady Lucy after a re-crop and auto-white balance fix from LightRoom. Fixes up the yellow a bit, yes?
