"Pop" is a little more than "contrast" . . . I would describe it more as "vibrance" (and BW photos have their own type of vibrance . . . various shades) . . . it's that combination of vibrance, detail and contrast that makes the photo come to life, or "pop".
I have to admit that I simply don't like the burn and dodge tools in photoshop --I've tried "liking" it LOL, but can't get quite the natural look without doing additional layering and editing. I found that if it's a particular area that needs to be lightened, Viveza (again by Nik software . . . google should hire me for promoting this LOL) does a more natural and certainly quicker adjustment.
This is a very artistic photo, so I'm sure you had a certain look in mind. You just need to experiment and fine tune until you get there.
Ah okay, yes vibrance I turned down as well, lol.
Hmmm I dont know. Will have to think a little about realistic edit - this is definitely not my immediate approach. And, I think you know, but just to clarify, I used the burn to darken dark areas, but maybe Viveza/Nik dont touch these dark areas, if using the filter you suggest. Maybe this darkening could be done better.
I'll have a look at Viveza, thanks
I had a quick play (am bored at work lol)

Glad to give you something to do, so you wont fall asleep, lol.
But I dont think this is the right edit, its fine that this is your approach but, why dont you try an edit with the points I said I wanted in this picture?
I hope you understand me, I am not saying its a bad edit or that you shouldn't have done it, not at all - but since I already wrote that I want it bright, then why make it darker?
Btw, the over exposure you are all talking about, is this in the sky?? Because I used a ton of time trying to correct this, after all my brightening layers. On my computer it looks fine now but when looking from my phone, I can still see a bit :/
