Nice catch Sandpatch. I really like the low angle you used for this shot.

Thank you. I wanted to get the old Southern Railway station sign in the shot, so had to stand along the shoulder of the highway which was a bit worrisome. I staked out the spot, figured out my settings and stood in a safe place until train time.

Here's a close up of the sign, battered and faded, but carrying on.

The last vestiges of traditional railroading are becoming harder and harder to find. :( There are a number of mainlines in my region that have no remaining structures and no signals, leaving a right-of-way nearly bereft of photo props of any kind. Mileposts are about the only thing to work with.

Yes we are getting to the place where all locomotives look the same & all signals also have a sameness. I saw this in Fostoria OH along the old long gone Nickle Plate RR right of way. I'd passed this spot many times. but happened to look right as I passed by & saw it.

According to their web site:

"U.S. Sugar is the only sugarcane farming company in the continental United States that transports all of its cane to a sugar factory by railroad."

They're both beautiful. I prefer a bit less roadbed and more sky in my shots, perhaps something like I edited below. (I hope that it was okay for me to use your photo to illustrate.)

For certain, both of your images are excellent. You're blessed to have such beautiful trains to photograph. If I tried to capture a photo of this train, I'd be overwhelmed with its beauty and suffer a blurry result from nervously shaking hands.

Out of the wayback machine comes an old snapshot from the mid-1980s taken in Montgomery, AL of Seaboard System GE U-30C 1553, ex-L&N. It became CSX 7247 and is long off the roster. I don't know what became of it.

Was "in town" with the camera and had an hour to kill caught this little gem coming through on the UP Chicago Service Unit - Geneva Subdivision heading east towards Chicago.

A few years ago I found a vintage Southern Railway signal bridge and signals standing on the mainline in Lowell, NC, but wasn't able to catch any trains passing beneath it. I stopped by today for the first time since and was thrilled that it's still in service. I had better luck with trains today.
