South Carolina has beautiful beaches and ocean breezes, but rail lines in the hilly northwest part of the state are far removed from the tourists. As such, helper locomotives are deployed. Here's the 5472 readied in the helper pocket at Enoree, SC.

Nice portrait Sandpatch. This one must be the rear unit. It's sporting a FRED on its nose. We don't get to see helpers here in Ohio it's too flat.

I shot this a week ago last Friday. Sandpatch it seems you & I were up to the same thing in different states. A northbound NS coal train in Bucyrus OH.

Here are some more shots from Bucyrus & vicinity. The station was built by the Toledo & Columbus Southern in 1892. That railroad is long gone, the NS now passes behind the station.

The highrail was doing a track inspection of the NS - CF&E diamond just north of the station.

The NS freight train has just come off the southbound NS track & is headed east on the CF&E tracks. I chased this guy until I found a nice rural crossing.

Man, those at GREAT shots Chuck. Glad that the GTI photobombed a shot. :D

With its varied surfaces, modest size and architectural detail, the Bucyrus depot would make a perfect model railroad kit.

The good folks preserving the station should get together with a company & produce that model. I'm sure the proceeds would help them. That's a great idea Sandpatch.

Sun flare, why didn't I shoot my usual multiple pictures? :( Oh yea, I was asked if I would like a tour. :) Mostly original inside including original windows, wood floors in the passenger station and the plank in the freight side.

Took a trip to catch a few shots on NS's "Rathole" in eastern TN and KY. CN units are at Spring City, TN and the NS intermodal train is at Tateville, KY.

Here are two more NS trains at other locations on the line near Tateville. This is one of the busiest mainlines in the east, connecting Cincinnati and Chattanooga. NS's Illinois Terminal heritage unit can be seen on the grain train in the first photo.

It's NS's railroad, but borrowed power is abundant, as seen here with a CSX unit in the lead and a BNSF unit in trail. The big bridge at Burnside, KY is a landmark. Unfortunately I didn't have time to wait for a (perfect photo composition) southbound here, so had to settle for a northbound rail train.
