A CSX local freight derailed at 1AM nearby, so I checked it out late this morning. A dozen cars derailed, but thankfully there were no injuries. Law enforcement was everywhere, so I had to settle for a cropped 200mm telephoto shot from a highway bridge. The derailment also blocked Amtrak's Silver Star in both directions. I tried to find the southbound Star's trainset, but without any luck.

It seems that a knucklehead parked a bulldozer close to the tracks and it was hit by the train. This is a somewhat remote area, so I'm guessing that perhaps something criminal was afoot.

CSX is back in action following the derailment. Caught this heavy ballast (crushed stone) train at dusk moving toward the site.

I'd hoped to catch a vivid red signal in this shot, but the confounded "approach lit" signals stay dark until the very last second as the train passes by. :( We really need some more wires strung around this spot don't we?

Nice photo Ted. A signature design from the B&O -- a wagontop caboose. U-shaped steel elements were used to structure the carbody along its length and steel sheet was attached to these, curving inward at the roofline to look something like a covered wagon. It resulted in an economical, strong and enduring marque of the B&O that was also adopted to boxcars and covered hoppers. I'm happy know that an example has been saved!

UP & KCS locomotives leading an eastbound CSX manifest freight on the Mount Victory sub of the CSX. They are just entering Marion OH. I saw this train several more times as I headed east on my photo tour today.

I used my new to me Nikon J5 for these shots. Great little camera, but it will take me a while to get used to it. Especially the no viewfinder part.
