Former SOU depot at Spartanburg, SC, now served by Amtrak. Shot yesterday in the drizzly overcast from Hurricane Matthew. I was actually happy to get this photo, as on nice days the sun is in an uncooperative spot. In this challenging light, I swapped to Matrix metering instead of Center-Weighted metering and was well pleased with the result. Matrix provided superior lighting on the depot walls, which were cast in shadow and notably darker in Spot.

Nice to see an old station restored for use. Unfortunately this B&O station in Deshler OH is likely to fall down. It needs help & won't get it.

Nice shot an VERY neat that the interlocking tower still stands at Deshler, OH. Unmanned I'm sure, but standing towers are becoming so very rare. This is the former B&O RN Tower at Ravenna, OH, shot 09/24/1997.

The PRR operated RAVE Tower in Ravenna, but during our brief visit I wasn't able to locate it, assuming it still stood.

As a young guy I was invited into the PRR/PC tower at Brady Lake Ohio & given a tour. An amazing piece of early 20th century engineering. Rows of armstrong levers. No pictures other than those in my minds eye.

The tower in Deshler seems to be used by MW & RR police so maybe it's future is more secure than the stations.

You are blessed to have been able to see it. When I was a teen in the mid-70s, I was invited into the EJ&E tower in Barrington, IL and was in heaven. Here's an outside shot and one of the "Armstrong" levers and model board. The timing clocks on the model board were common in towers and prevented the Operator from pulling a signal down in front of an approaching train. If a change was to be made, the clock would lock the plant and run off time to assure that an approaching train would be able to pass safety by before a route was changed.

Barrington Tower was closed in 2003 and demolished in 2006. :(

Great photos Sandpatch. Wish I'd had a camera with me at Brady Lake that day many years ago. Brady Lake tower still stands & is now in a park.

Thank you. Neat that Brady Lake Tower was saved! Spaulding (IL) Tower seen below was saved too and now resides at the Illinois Railroad Museum. This is a 1976 shot (how can this be from 40 years ago?!!) using my Nikkormat FTn and Plus X film. Spaulding was also an EJ&E tower and stood at the crossing of the Milwaukee Road's mainline between Chicago and Iowa.

That's a fine photo of the tower & diamonds. I wish I could take the wayback machine to that time & shoot more pictures of the railroad plant rather than all the roster shots I made.

Small world Sandpatch, my first Nikon camera was a Nikkormat FT2 with a 50mm f2. Wish I still had it, I ran many rolls of Tri-X though that bad boy.:encouragement:

Back to the present day.... Two intermodals meet on the CSX line east of North Baltimore Ohio. One coming from CSX's intermodal terminal & one headed in.

It was an odd day on that line. MW were working at both the NS CSX crossings in Fostoria. There was a long wait between trains. Trains sitting on the line waiting for clearance. Dispatchers on my scanner asking MW how long, how long. It was like that all day.
