Two Norfolk Southern trains from today, one train on the heels of the other.

Nice Ted. That unit caught my eye -- it's nearly 40 Years Old and still churning out the HP. It actually pre-dates Norfolk Southern by a few years, having been bought by predecessor road Southern Railway. This model (SD-40-2) was once one of the most common in the U.S., but after the passage of many years, have become something for fans to savor.

That photo was taken in Berea, so you may have seen that engine before.

.... I thought Southern favored high hoods. Do you think the hood was changed during one of its rebuilds?

That's a very good question and I'm uncertain. I recall reading somewhere that it cost the SOU and N&W (another high hood proponent) an additional $10,000/Unit for the high hood. Maybe they thought to curb costs late in their histories?

Speaking of high hoods, I hit paydirt today when I found NS's SOU SD-40 Heritage Unit in Columbia, SC. She was built in '71, retired in '07, rebuilt in Altoona in '15 and repainted in Chattanooga. She roams the Piedmont Division working trains as needed and spreading good cheer with a regal paint scheme.

Here's a locomotive reflected from a water puddle. It gives the wind look and almost personalize the locomotive.

Fuji X-10 in EXR mode.

That is exceptionally cool Marcel! Just a fantastically creative shot. I'm often concentrating so much on the nuts and bolts of railroading that I miss opportunities like you captured.

That is an interesting engine on lead. 7106 looks to me like a GP7 or GP9 with the short hood lopped off. What do you other railfan's think?
