Thanks a lot for all of your recent rail shots! Wonderful stuff. No glossy paint in the Thionville scene, just a hard-working unit built for tonnage. Diesel hydraulics are very rare in the U.S., the last being Krauss-Maffei units built in the '60s, powered by twin Maybach V16s.

I've been a railway enthusiast for 50 years At the moment I'm living in a village some distance away from a railway line so the trip to Thionville the other day was a great opportunity for photos, though overcast.

Britain got rid of its hydraulics many years ago and, in the process, eliminated some of the most beautiful diesels ever built: Westerns, Warships and Hymeks. Here in France, we've never really had any hydraulics to mention.

I hope it won't be too long before I can take more shots.

Union Pacific 5398 Waiting on a red signal at the Rochelle Railroad park. (No Flash)

They do not stop that often here. I have more railroad night photography that I'll be posting in the coming days. Some are done with one on camera speedlight and some re done with multiple speedlights off camera.:D

Here is another one. This one and the last one (BNSF 652) were both "accepted" at a railroad photo site on the web. Not sure if I can post the link here (been so long I forgot the rules about posting links to non-photography web sites) but I will tell you that they have a very strict criteria to get a photo accepted. Granted they are both night shots and that helps I sure. Thanks everyone for the "likes" I tend to think outside of being a night shot they both are strong photo's. On a side note, the trains I photograph at not parked, they are on the move.

CSX in St. Augustine FL pre-dawn. Missed some shots due to lens fog. Had to wipe after each shot.

Great shots Rick -- night photos of trains are a real challenge, moving or not. VERY cool stuff you posted.

Some years ago I was at a weekend railfan convention and photos were being judged. Many were rare, having been shot on Kodachrome on the 1950s. The judges were merciless.. "Weeds in foreground DETRACTS", "Angle of sun UNSATISFACTORY", etc. I was aghast, as the pictures were jaw-droppingly beautiful. That evening, some fellows set up slide projectors in their hotel rooms to show their collections and it was funny listening from the hallway ... "Wow! "Exellent!" "Mmmmm!" To the uninformed, it must have sounded like girlie photos were on tap. :p

Shot today in Yemassee, SC between Savannah, GA and Charleston, SC on the former ACL mainline. I was shooting almost straight into the sun, so it was a bit frustrating. That phone pole has to go.

Missouri and Northern Arkansas Engine southbound, pulling a few cars out of Clinton, Missouri.

That's some BIG power on that little train -- a 3600 HP EMD SD-45. This is classic stuff, a locomotive still revered with its flared radiators and V-20 engine. These were once the hottest units on the road, as built from the mid-1960s to early '70s. Your captures are excellent -- thanks!

Taken Saturday on River Street in Savannah, GA is this gem of a streetcar. When I first saw it, I thought to myself that it's too authentic to be a modern remake. Sure enough, it's a 1930's car from Melbourne, Australia! It's been modified to run on biodiesel, but someday they hope to string wire and restore it to electric power. The trolley poles are there and ready to go .....

Another picture in Savannah, this one at the Georgia State Railroad Museum. This nifty little 0-4-0 saddle tanker chuffs passengers around the property and is just the perfect little locomotive for the task. The museum is definitely worth a visit.
