Neat stuff john thomas! I love researching old lines. Marietta was served by the B.& O. and the Pennsylvania.

The Pennsy line went north through Caldwell, OH to Zanesville, OH. It's gone. One B.& O. line went northwest through Lowell, OH to Zanesville. It now runs only a short distance beyond Lowell to a power plant, assuming the plant hasn't been recently shut by Federal air regulations. The other B.& O. line ran south from Marietta, OH to Belpre, then west through Athens, Chillicothe and into Cincinnati. This line has been pulled up from Belpre to a place west of Athens called Red Diamond.

I have a reprint of a 1928 U.S. rail atlas. Comparing its extensive web of lines to today's thinned out routes is quite interesting. The early 20th Century was an awesome era for railroad expansion and modernization.

That is this line. These were built during the Civil War and were last used in 1916. Each stone is 1.5 to 2 tons and no mortar was used.

Post your train photos (as you want them seen)

Since the existing thread restricts the photos to thumbnail size (unless you really make an effort), I have decided to start a new thread where photos can be viewed in full size with a simple right-click.

Marne-Rhine Canal meets Paris-Strasbourg main line. This is one of the most sought-after locations for railway photographers, though it is extremely difficult to find, and everyone wants to shoot a boat and a train. I was lucky as I had been working on the boat a few minutes earlier.

When I click on any image in the original train thread it opens it full size immediately. You may be experiencing some glitches in the system or in your computer.

Found a black & white print in the closet, taken in Hudson, OH in 1977 I am guessing. Conrail was only a year old then, so locomotive consists were a dog's breakfast of the many component railroads that were merged into Conrail. Up front is a former Erie-Lackawanna EMD SD-45-2. Nikkormat FTn, Plus-X film.

I merged the threads as there is no difference in viewing between the two.

Shot in Asheville, NC today, a visiting Canadian Pacific locomotive. Another shot from another angle is posted in the 'Almost Photos" thread. That durned hopper car forced this alternate shot, which turned out okay I guess. Those woodchip cars are bound for a paper mill in Canton, NC.

Norfolk Southern recently sold some of its lines in western NC to the Blue Ridge Southern a shortline. I found one of the road's locomotives in Arden, NC, formerly owned by the Union Pacific and first by the Delaware & Hudson.

CFL Class 1500 (Vossloh G 1206) diesel hydraulic at Thionville .....

Thanks a lot for all of your recent rail shots! Wonderful stuff. No glossy paint in the Thionville scene, just a hard-working unit built for tonnage. Diesel hydraulics are very rare in the U.S., the last being Krauss-Maffei units built in the '60s, powered by twin Maybach V16s.
