I was just thinking about what a great thing PTC is. CSX had a train collision in Carey Ohio this summer. PTC didn't work there either. I hope no one was injured.

NS 191 advances west at Cayce, SC, safely passing a vintage distant signal. We don't need no stinkin' PTC here.

This was one of those spots where you have a choice between good lighting a poor composition or poor lighting and a good composition. I chose the latter so as to include the train and the home signal in the distance.

There's a nearby steel mill that operates some vintage Alco motive power, including an RS-1 and S-1. Their big ol' fat exhaust stacks are gone; I have no idea what's under the hood. I don't know their heritage. JRWX is Johnson Railway Service. I just found these units, so haven't seen them operate.

Wow nice find Sandpatch! Love that RS1. I'd guess those have been re-engined with something cleaner & more reliable.

I think you're right. Looking at those little stacks, I'll bet there are truck diesels under those hoods. Thinking that speeds are slow and tonnages are on the light side, these would be a good choice. I was just reading that the RS-1's Alco 539 straight six engine had a bore of 12-1/2 Inches, the size of a large dinner plate. Long ago I volunteered on weekends at a tourist shortline and someone in the shop had taken a ruined 539 piston and welded it up into a little chairside table!

Taken earlier this month in Clemson, SC with my kid's D3300 is this Norfolk Southern northbound and the Amtrak depot. The line is the former Southern Railway main line. NS was busy this day, with three trains passing in 40 Minutes. The D3300 was nice to use, with familiar functionality and better resolution than my old D5100. BTW, my kid is a 3rd Generation Nikon owner and often uses my father's c.1970 Nikkor lenses just for the fun of it. :encouragement:

Snagged Norfolk Southern's Monongahela Heritage Unit this afternoon on Train 192 at Simpson, SC. I'd not seen this unit before. I chose a spot where the unit wouldn't be in dappled sunlight and the signal could be seen.

Nice catch Sandpatch. I really like this shot!

Too bad NS didn't put the heritage repaints on older units like SD40-2 locomotives. They sure would have had a time warp look to them.

That's a fine picture Marilynne, capturing the entire span of years, from the glory days to today's state of decline. This doesn't look like an Amtrak stop, but is it?

Finally bought a 35mm slide scanner at a fair price on Cyber Monday. Just starting to mess with it, trying to balance enormous file sizes with suitable quality. I have much to learn! Here's one of my first experiments, taken 06/08/1997 at Allentown, AZ. Looks kinda pixelated.

Nicely lit shots seem to scan better and in smaller file sizes. Here's an SOU SD-9, taken 01/28/1989 at Inman Yard in Atlanta, GA.

Love the shots from the way-back machine Sandpatch.

Here is an old one I stumbled on. 611 Southbound in Lewis Center Ohio. I'd guess I shot this in the mid 80's.

The 611 came through Chicago the week of 8/3/83 that is my son's birthday. Made the towns front page in the newspaper, I can remember because I bought a paper the week he was born and saved it for him till he was 21 and gave it to him.

When I was in Sioux City, IA I took to photographing interesting graffiti on rail cars.

Some of these guys are pretty amazing with a can of spray paint!

Below are a few of my favorites!

Thanks SP!

It was an Amtrak stop. The station is on the right. It was restored many years ago. Not sure what happened, but a new station was built about a mile down the track. The city uses this station as a storage area now.
