:D What I need is a bagged GTI that I can raise for ground clearance when railfanning …….

This is true. I love my GTI, but when the roads get rough it kind of lets me down. That being said it is hard to let it go for something with more dirt road capability. Never thought of raising it up. :encouragement:

I measured my wife's 2017 Golf and its ground clearance is 6-1/4", both at the front lip and the lowest point of the engine/oil pan. That's not too bad. One of these days I'll stop by the VW Dealer and measure a GTI there. I've found sales literature on ground clearance is sometimes wrong.

My wife is on the road for an out-of-town function and phoned me today en-route to say that she saw an NS military train at a fairly distant passing siding. To find a train "in the hole" at that location has become unusual, as is a daylight southbound, so I grabbed the D5100 and headed out. Glad I went, as I was able to get some shots of it in the siding, then meeting a northbound freight and rolling again at track speed.

Those are great shots! You managed to get some sweet ones without all cell phone shooters in the way. It is amazing what some people will do. Glad you didn't have to witness someone getting their award. They sure were trying.

... and the crowd standing about on the other track is likely completely oblivious about the potential of an opposing movement coming their way.

Great shots all cwgrizz! I agree with Chuck that you worked miracles avoiding the many cell phones waving about.

Caught NS 192 this afternoon with 30 Seconds to spare. This spot is about 1/4 Mile from the highway (that lane in the background is a private driveway), so I had to run. I thought the composition here might be interesting where an industrial spur meets the mainline. If only the switchstand reflector were red, I'd have had a small splash of color.

An ugly sight. Hopefully no one was injured. Was this on NS in Luxor, PA?
Yeah exactly. According to the news stations one ran into the back of another then a third hit the debris and cars, that was around the curve I couldn't get to it, it's on private property. Not sure how the two ran into each other in the opposite direction that the pic was take is a 1/2 mile straight stretch, the direction they where coming from. Also no injuries.

Golly, what a mess. New Federally-mandated Positive Train Control should have prevented the collision. The investigation will make interesting reading. The placement of PTC technology and cab signaling has allowed recent removal of traditional intermediate block signals on this line.
