Birthday present (2019)

Cornelian and gold Cartier cufflinks from the 1980s. The attach and detach mechanism was so cleverly designed and engineered...! Not many opportunities to wear them these days. They were a present from my Mom for my 30th birthday.

Nikon Z7, Micro-Nikkor 105mm ƒ/2.8 G VR macro lens, FTZ adapter. Gitzo tripod, Arca-Swiss Cube C1 geared head. Composite shot made up of 20 focus-stacked exposures, using the built-in function on the camera. Stack processed with Helicon Focus.

Turquoise Blue (2020)

I purchased the Navajo turquoise during a road trip through Arizona in the early 1980s, while I was studying at Stanford Business School. The solid gold bracelet was my mother’s. She gifted it to my wife who now has it.

Nikon Z7, Micro-Nikkor 105mm, ƒ/2.8 G VR macro lens, FTZ adapter. Gitzo tripod, Arca-Swiss Cube C1 geared head. Flash lighting. Single exposure.

Old Money (2019)

The old 10-franc “Voltaire” note was in circulation in France between the beginning of 1964 and the end of 1973. It is the note I’ve always liked best, æsthetically. Together with some solid silver 10-franc and 50-franc coins from the 1960s and 70s.

Nikon Z7, Voigtländer Nokton 58mm, ƒ/1.4 lens, manual focus, FTZ adapter. Gitzo tripod, Arca-Swiss Cube C1 geared head. Flash lighting. Single exposure.

Warm Colors (2019)

Shot for a Flickr theme-based group. Lighting was not done as I usually do with strobes, but with small continuous LED lights (Lumecubes), hence the long exposure (5 seconds). Gobos were used.

Nikon Z7, Nikkor Z “Nifty Fifty” 50mm, ƒ/1.8 S lens. Gitzo tripod, Arca-Swiss Cube C1 geared head. LED continuous lighting. Composite shot made up of 26 focus-stacked exposures, using the built-in function on the camera. Stack processed with Helicon Focus.

Tea Time (2021)

I have not retained any technical information about this photo. There was focus-stacking involved and all EXIF were stripped during the processing of the stack. All I know is that the camera was a Nikon Z7 because that’s the one I had at the time.

A Z7 shot by a sibling (2019)

Although the Z7 was released in September 2018, it took me a few months to take the plunge. Like many other DSLR (and former SLR) users, I was scared to lose the clarity, precision and immediacy of the optical viewfinder. It was not until January of the following year that, trusting all the good things my trustworthy reviewers were saying about the Z7 viewfinder, and having tested it myself in the store, that I decided to buy one with three ƒ/1.8 S primes: the 35, 50 and 85mm. At some point in January 2019, I took advantage of the fact that I had two Z7s in the house at the same time (for a problem of languages in the menus), to take a couple of product shots of one with the other.

Nikon Z7, Nikkor Z 35mm, ƒ/1.8 S lens. Gitzo tripod, Arca-Swiss Cube C1 geared head. Multi-flash lighting.
