re: #40

I like the colourful background that is nevertheless much too sharp and
its texture too close and too visible… otherwise, quite an improvement.

The subject is not is focus in its entire length. The metal parts and the
wood work are beautiful features and should be fully appreciated.

The richness of colours and tones are all light dependant! Although the blue
specular reflection is a good idea and well done, the rest of the picture is not well
served by the chosen main light that is both at a poor angle to the scene and
throwing nasty shadows where the eye would not expect them. Uncomfortable!

A last thing for today on this picture is the layout. On this take, the cork is an
obstacle to the corkscrew, visually speaking! Find it a place behind the screw.

Have a good day…

Excellent review, thank you!!

No problem at all with the rejection.

Inspired by Kodiaks blog to have a go at a product shot.
Its quite a learning curve.

This is my best attempt so far. Shot this evening outside. Probably better if I used a polarising filter to let me lower the camera angle and still see through the glass on the watch face.

Here is a bigger version watch | Flickr - Photo Sharing!

One thing for certain - I think I need a new watch.

Just a try at giving some input:

At first view I like the picture, unity of colour and noble materials. Product comes out very clear.
However looking at the bigger version, I lost my enthusiasm, for my own education I like to find out why

The background structure somehow comes out too much and gets in the way of the subject for me. Some softer material or more distance might improve the picture.

Where I seem to like the light play on the subject, I somehow have trouble with the overall light. I find it to hard, but that might be personal.

The layout serves the product, but I somehow find it too standard, a little surprise or maybe the rule of 3 (even diagonally) might have given it more strength.

Thanks for the feedback I really appreciate it, I am trying top get better and all input is welcome.

Vincent : I have to agree when I look at the big version I too don't really think it works! Choosing the right background is I am beginning to realise a key decision.

As I said in the post I took this outdoors, the watch was placed on a garden chair with no special lighting I think maybe some extra lighting would help.

Thanks for being constructive it really helps.

Gentlemen!

I don't know your age nor face… nevertheless, I will try to express myself in a
universal way that you will understand: "You're both f…ing crazy and I love it!"

I appreciate the fun you had in your respective exercise and I am moved by the
self-criticism you demonstrate… "Its quite a learning curve!" …I know.

wornish,
I was trying to type these lines as a "Reply to thread" came in and I could read
your own observation and thoughts on your post. I am very proud if this thread
really is the trigger of your attempt as you call it.

Vincent,
This marked sentence in your "input" is the most intelligent, spontaneous, and
at the same time candid remark I hear from anyone since a long time. This
deserves you an accolade from me… just shut up and take it… it's all my pleasure!

Please, go on! I need to sit back and reflect on this… as I'll keep an eye on the thread!

I'll come back to this, if you want?

I think this tighter crop and different background works better.

Can you see my reflection ?

Yep! I can… as I can see tons of uncontrolled specular lights.

Hello wornish,

A positive change was done of the bkgrnd, finer texture and details. Why did
you choose a blue? This bkgrnd allows gradience but you did not use it

Rendition quite too bright, and focus not wall to wall! It does not have to be but
I see it was your intent and were unsuccessful.

PoV is good crop is limiting. Bracelet not flat!

You solved a bkgrnd problem, now, tackle an other one!

Have a good day…

I recommend all in this thread to look at the internet for the product category you took and compare your work whith what shops show.
I do believe that a critical view is essential for improvement, but a lot of "work" out there is not that good to say the least.

@wornish I agree with Kodiak´s comments, I see you tried to improve and for me it certainly did improve, but yes that first picture was already good. Anyway you will never please all.

Kodiaks comments stuck with me too really good advice from someone who knows what he is talking about. Since then I haven't done a product shot :blue:. BUT that's down to me.
Will try again.

I was really enjoying this thread , I like the situation of having a single someone speak with authority about each photo like that.
Its a shame that it petered out.
