When I spotted this tiger swallowtail I thought it was one of those printed tin garden ornaments. These used to be so common here and now I'm lucky if I see one or two in a year.

sorry, I already posted this in the insects section, not realising there was a butterfly and moth thread! Anyway, here she is. My wife shot this yesterday with her d3100 and 18-55 kit lens. She is really proud :congratulatory:

As well she should be. They are very tough to capture a photo of.

Southern Crimson Moth (Pyrausta inornatalis). Had half a dozen flitting around today, which is unusual as they usually don't come further west than Texas -- maybe the Southern California confused them. I hope they stay a while, so I can get a better shot.

A pretty bad picture of a dusky wing, but they are very skiddish and don't like to land in the open
