I decided I wanted to see if the AF-P 70-300mm would be a better zoom for me than the 55-300mm kit lens I got with my D5500. Monday I found it on Amazon as a "used - like new" item claiming to have a slightly dinged box and no warranty but a 30-day return window. The price was only $329 and I bit the bullet. Thought it might be nice to have as a lighter lens for hiking. I did the firmware update and started playing with it in the kitchen. I was really surprised that at full zoom, it just wasn't that close. Really surprised. So I shot with both lenses from the exact same location.

This isn't focus breathing is it? It didn't seem to get closer and further as it focuses and then settle at this distance. This is just what you get at full zoom with both lenses.

I finally picked up a thumb grip for my Coolpix A. Not a fan of the bubble level on top, but it was the nicest one available. Another had a thumb screw mount on the hotshoe, which I am not a fan of.
I'll have the bubble level covered with something once it arrives.

As much as i love my Nikon 500mm f/4 it has its limitations. As a birding lens it does pretty much everything i want it to do. However, when it comes to aviation, it has flaws. The number of shots i cant take because the aircraft is just too near for any kind of usable image is frustrating. This is where super zooms come into their own. I've been eyeing the Sigma 150-600mm Sport since they came out and finally bagged one (yeah, succumbed to GAS). Added the dock and increased the AF. Only took a few shots, but its a very responsive lens and lighter than the 500mm. So far, quite impressed

A couple purchases for me -
My Hard drive is getting close to full so it is time to get another one, however I have seen NAS drives and drives that are accessible from away from the house so I opted for one of those.
I have also been looking at and researching MIDI controllers for lightroom. I wanted to go with a Behringer one however they are shipped from the states and I am far too impatient for that so I went with the Korg NanoKontrol 2
Coupled with a free software called Midi2LR, The board has full customisation hence my labels after I have set them up
Initial reactions it has sped up my editing !! Its so much easier than having to use the mouse to move the sliders. It feels much more intuitive.

don't know what you do as far as backups but if you had gotten the My Cloud Mirror, you would have 2 drives set up as Raid 1 where the second one is used as an automatic backup. i actually have the My Book Duo (not a NAS) that i used to store all my photos but stopped using it because the USB connection never worked right. i just recently replaced it with this NAS..

I also buy a mag or two sometimes when I'm in the big city at Chapters or Indigo or other retailer that carries them. I do keep them, filed away orderly, or as my wife says, I hord them. I just like them, a little indulgence I give myself, and they are filled with zero calorie eye candy.

I have a surplus NAS IT gave to me, no longer suitable on our 'enterprise' - been sitting in a box waiting for me to get around to figuring it out and installing it. I think it has two one T HD's in it. . . . One of these days I'll get on this NAS bandwagon.

take your time. although i got mine set up for what i need it for (mapping a drive letter to the server and storing/copying all files out to it), the networking stuff is a pain in the arse - figuring out your IP, default gateway and DNS server addresses, connecting to the internet, etc. there is no user guide to speak of so you're kind of stuck. at least with the Synology.
I run a couple hard drives for the really important stuff (weddings etc), they are SSD so shouldnt fail, I have2 with the same data on, the MyCloud is really for "on the go" and "active" work.
A lot of my shoots these days are involving models and make up artists so after the shoot we have a set or RAW's to be edited, I use a Surface Pro for all my work so being able to have a drive that I can just pull the files off and then add to when finished is great, especially when I want to get out and go for a coffee, I can take what I need with me and still have access to my files

don't let the name fool you - they run a lot of competitions and their standards are just as a high as a professional grade magazine.

Recently sold the Nikon 1 V2 and upgraded to a Nikon 1 V3. I also added a Fuji X-T20 as my second Fuji body to my primary shooter, the X-T2. After seeing Laurie's results with the J5 at the Circle B (and planning on attending in 2018), I couldn't pass on a great deal for a second used J5 as a backup.

Can't say I've heard of that one - but followed the links - if I see it on the shelf I'll pick up a copy. Chapters/Indigo in Canada carry a lot of British magazines. Mom was born in Scotland - always loved magazines and stuff from "the old country".
Craigslist - $40 - very clean 18-55 VR to go on my backup camera, the ol' D3100 that was left "sans lens" in a tiny little lowepro bag without much use.
Well, since the life now allows for a new "friend" ( ) who just happens to marvel at photography and expressed an interest, the old gal got the dust wiped off and now has her own 18-55 kit lens so someone else can start learning the basics and see if the bug will bite anew!
The biggest win will be if the bug bites her hard enough that she can understand my GAS when it hits hard. The loss will be if she suffers from GAS as much as I do! LOL!!!
Now to sell the motorcycle so I can fund a D750 and a new 150-600.
