My pre-owned Siggy 12-24 arrived as well!!!!!:

We'll have to compare notes. I'm pretty pleased with mine. Only drawback so far is that you can't use screw on filters. Congrats!!!

In keeping with the current Sigma flavor of the thread I'll be testing out a new Sigma 30mm f/1.4 DC HSM tomorrow, so nothing but a stock photo until then.

Expectations are high, will post real-world photos in a couple days.

Expectations officially shattered...

It didn't take long to figure out this lens is not working out. I'm going to return the copy I have for a replacement before giving up on it all together however. When the lens behaves, it's pretty stellar, it's just not behaving for me.

The problem, in a nutshell, is the lens does not auto-focus for s--t when using any focal point other than the one located dead-center. Move away from using that dead-center focus point and things nosedive really hard. In the example images below (all are crops taken from 95%), the shot on the left was taken using the center focus point. The shot on the right was taken using a focus point in one of the four corners. This same problem occurred at a couple different f/stops though I didn't spend a lot time investigating the details. If these shots look a little flat it's because they're RAW files, saved to JPG with no intentional post-processing.

Hopefully the new copy will do better because this is not acceptable:

Well, since you put it that way, no. But i am not as enamored of G series lenses as some others seem to be.. Have you ever had a D series 85 mm lens. I would be interested in hearing about that as I have long coveted such a lens.

Oh yes I would like to hear a about that lens too! Maybe the af-d lens will be a doable lens for me too! :)
I really like this thread, and I learn quite a bit from all of you, though I must admit I turn green with envy nearly every time I get on this thread! Lol :frog:

I'm not a huge fan of Nikon G lenses either, in all honesty, though I do own a couple. Compared to my Sigma f/2.8 50-150 or Tokina f/2.8 11-16mm my G-lenses look and feel like toys. Still, they get the job done and the price is right.

The 85mm f/1.8D I do not own but I have handled and shot with a couple at the college. In short, it's a gorgeous "tank" of a lens. That front element just gleams and the body is thick and heavy in your hand and the lens just reeks of quality. Both a G and a D lens will get you from Point A to Point B; the difference, as they say, is in the ride.

All that being said, I decided to just give up on the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 and instead pulled the trigger on a (*gulp*) ... Sigma 35mm f/1.4 DG HSM. It should be here in a few days.

Thanks HF ! I sure hope your new lens works out much better for ya buddy! I need a 35mm too but I think the version your getting would be too costly for me. So I'll likely have to buy a G version, since it seems to be the best for cheap. Lol :)

Thanks, Bill... I'm hopeful too. I'm currently in the process of revamping my lens inventory and trying to focus higher quality lenses and fewer of them.

The Nikon 35mm f/1.8G is a great lens, period. I've owned it, shot with it, still have access to one (when it's not on the girlfriends camera, which is rare) and still love it. The fact it sells for ~$200, NIB, just sweetens the deal.

I may be able to pick it up new for $159.99 if I can get the money up before it goes off sale, so I'll sure try! :)
Thanks bud! :D

I guess this counts, since I spent 89 cents for the bottle of witch hazel. It is Kroger brand, which has a nice shape, good opacity and a pretty consistent bottom thickness.

Diffuser for my on-board flash:
plastic bottle
a 20 pica, 6 point wood reglet (a tongue depressor would work if you don't have a letterpress shop at hand)
duct tape
rubber band

No replacement for my SB 700, but it works pretty good, without any noticeable hot spots. I also made some cutouts of white fiber packing material in various thicknesses to drop in for additional muting.

Had to put an end to the single camera household issue. This should arrive within a week. :) Trying to add a 17-50mm 2.8 as well.
