Made a couple of purchase recently but nothing too terribly exciting. Picked up a Tamrac Zuma 3 camera bag:

Tamrac Zuma 3 Photo/iPad Shoulder Messenger Bag 5723 (Black/Burgundy)

Should make a nice little bag to carry around some extra lenses while I'm out and about. I have a lowepro 200 AW lens exchange case that I attached to the MAS loops on the side, works great for switching out my 70-200mm with a smaller lens and then back again while on the move. The rest of the bag has plenty of space for extra batteries, a filter or two, my teleconverters, but it's not so big that it's cumbersome to carry so it's a nice to have as a lens carrier.

My second most recent purchase, a B+W 77mm Digital Clear MRC-Nano 007. I don't normally use protective filters on my lenses but I got asked to do a shoot of the local VFW doing some training, they'll be burning down an old condemned building. Having shot a forest fire or two way back in the dark ages I've had a run in or two with flying, burning debris so figured it would be worth a few bucks to have it on hand so I can throw it on the 70-200mm 2.8 VR.

After getting some lackluster photos due to the CP filter on my 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 lens, I decided to replace the filter. With the old CP filter, the greens were turning an ugly yellow/green which was difficult to correct during editing. So this Hoya HD2 CP Filter just arrived today. Hope to get out soon to test it. I know Hoya has an HD3 CP filter, but this one was significantly less in cost.

I haven't tried the HD3s yet, but the HD2s work great for me.

My CL purchases from today:

Raynox DCR-250 and a couple of generic speedlight modifiers. $30 total! Not too bad.

I have that Raynox attachment - works for me - have some fun with it.

And what a great price - as I recall my cost on that was more than twice that - just for the DCR-250.

Good to know! The CP filter that I've been using for years is a B+W with rave reviews, but it just isn't working for me. :beguiled: Sure hope this one is better with not having such an ugly color change of the greens. It is very difficult to adjust the color when is like that.

It's really expensive having a camera store so close to where I go to class every week!

XQD Card, Card Reader, and Think Tank card wallet!

Wish I could upgrade the memory in my head as easily as the memory on my PC.

Some of the gear from my on-line shopping spree arrived.

After much consternation and back and forth on all the options out there finally pulled the trigger on Godox X1 Triggers.

Looked v. hard at going with Pocket Wizards - but the price was just too high. All of these are less than the cost of one Pocket Wizard ($180 CDN) and I have two Godox flash units which already have built in X1 receivers (and transmitters for that matter) so with these I can have four off flash units directly controlled, plus another on camera. I read many many reviews of every imaginable trigger out there and in the end went with the Godox line. It does offer ITTL - but also full manual. And one of the deciding factors is that the Godox X1 is one that turns off the preflash associated with TTL so that light meters can be used effectively. Or at least I have read that this is so, will be testing that this weekend.

Just picked these up from the post after work today and mounted them for a very quick test. Actually just tested the trigger firing the two Godox flash units I have - these worked.

Will post a more thorough threat on this later. But for now, here are some pics of my latest purchase - Godox X1 Trigger and two Receivers.

Godox X1R.jpgGodox X1T.jpg

UPDATE: Took the Trigger and Receivers, my SB 600 & 700 and Sekonic 308S light meter to see what happens.
And I am able to get meaningful results from the light meter - IF I use the test button to fire the flashes. Set up the lights - flashes are mounted on receiver units and flashes set to TTL mode. Then on the trigger menu select that group and set it to Manual. Dial in 1:1 and test fire - gives a meaningful result and I take a test shot - a properly exposed image at the settings the flash meter said I should use. Dial in 1:64 and try again. A different result on the flash meter - dial that into the camera and take the shot - very similar exposure. Again - the light metering must be done with the "Test" button on the trigger (or the receiver but the one on the camera is much easier to touch). They must have a way of the TTL pre-flashing not working in test mode. I can fire the flashes if the flash is set to M mode and the light meter works fine when the camera triggers the flash - but the handy dandy power adjusting on the trigger unit does not change the output of the flash, it is just a dumb trigger if the flash is in M, you have to adjust the power of the flash the old fashioned way on the flash unit. But yes - one way or the other, one can measure the light with a meter with the X1 Trigger system. Nice.

And I bought a Neweer 24"x24" Softbox with grid.

It seems solid enough and the price was right. Came with an "S" type bracket and grid included. Been watching video's on lighting and frequently see suggestions to use grids and I didn't have any. Now I do. I also bought a small circular grid to fit on the small reflector on my Godox 360 flash. Folding the softbox flat afterwards is easy - bending it pretzel like in the circular bag - not so easy. One youtuber I watched said he just keeps his flat - stores nice that way and does not get 'bent out of shape'. I would add that it also does not whack you in the face when you pop it open either. Mine will be stored as a flat triangle not a twisted pretzel in that circular bag.

Also picked up a set of four safety sandbags. Four for $25 made sense - better to drop a few dollars on some sandbags rather than have one of these top heavy light stands topple over with a pricey flash on top.

Out and about today and found the perfect "Trigger Bag" - a Lowe Pro SH100.

Designed for smaller cameras it came with one adjustable padded bit that I was able to use to create two compartments, the lower one holds the two receivers (I've since put in a lens cloth to separate them to reduce scratching) and the upper section for the trigger. Side pockets can hold a spare set of batteries.

And on a sweet 75% off clearance at the local "Source" aka old Radio Shack for $9 - can't go wrong. - Going to pick up another one to hold a wide lens.

My wife wanted a better tripod go I bought me a new/used Manfrotto tripod and gave her my Dolica which she liked. She then wanted to keep the Dolica Pistol grip that was on it so I updated it by changing the plate to a Arca Swiss which that plate can live on her camera all the time. So easier for her to deal with.

So I have the Gimbal to go on my Manfrotto but needed something for when I am not using the long lens. Today I got

Manfrotto 3265 Grip Action Ball Head with Quick Release. I matches my tripod quite nicely

My B&H order arrived at the Co-Op today. (Ya know your in farm country when the courier pick up place is the local Co-Op farm supply co.)

Added a Westcott Apollo 28x28 softbox with grid to my collection.
https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/62245-REG/Westcott_2334_Apollo_Softbox_with_Recessed.html
B&H had it on sale and are giving away a free grid (The sale is still on today I checked).
This is similar but different from my recent Neweer 2x2 grid box. The Apollo is 28" square - the Newer 24"
The Neweer is just one rebranding of this pop open 'tulip" style box. I think it is a Godox product - Godox rebrands all the time. Lastolite makes one but I think theirs is different - I'd hope so as they charge a lot more for it.

Comparing these two:
The Apollo is umbrella style and needs a stand with umbrella hole gizmo whereas the Newer needs a speed ring.
The Neweer tilts easier - the Apollo has limited tilting unless you put it onto a boom arm.
I think it is easier to put multiple flash units inside the Apollo. The hole at the back of the Neweer box is designed for one speedlight. But I can get my big Godox 360 bare-bulb flash in it easily.

Westcott Apollo is 'brand name" whereas the Neweer is well 'Brand "X" model' I paid close to twice as much for the Apollo even on sale and that is just for the softbox, diffuser and grid (does not even include a bag) whereas the Neweer included a $25 "
S-Type Bracket' /speedring that I can use with any Bowens style modifier and carrying case. The bracket is mostly plastic but seems sturdy enough.

I bought two different mounting brackets. The big "T" "
Impact Adjustable Twin Shoe" that is shown first with one of the flashes mounted upside down.
But with the Godox triggers under my flashes they seem to come very close to the top of the box. At least with one up and one down the light is a bit more balanced.
Downside of the Twin Shoe is that it takes two receivers if you want remote control of the flash power. This is a big advantage if the flash is inside a box with a grid and diffuser panel.

And I also bought a
Impact FA-300HS Triple-Flash Hot Shoe, this little gizmo has three hot shoes and allows one trigger to control all three.
Will post a separate story about curious issue with this unit. For the most part it worked better. One receiver can control three flashes inside the box - nice.

See the rest of the story here: https://nikonites.com/other-photogr...ot-shoe-adapter-has-issues-my-sb-700-ttl.html

Okay just received my Nikon 200-500 lens. I too debated so I hope I don't get buyers remorse :). Any way took it yesterday day while the wife and granddaughter made a snowman. Just AF on no VC as I am usually old school. The Snow man was shot at 1/500s f/7.1 ISO1000 270mm hand held. Now the other two for today was shot on a tripod with Beike BK-45 Gimbal the first one with high ISO and the later lower ISO with a 10 second delay. Now I'll have to wait for better weather to let it run through its paces.
