While wandering around Edinburgh on an Easter holiday we spotted a pair of used Nikon 70-200 F2.8's... One was in perfect condition for £1300, and the other had a few superficial scratches, but was up for just £956 (US $1420). I tried both and decided a few scratches makes no difference what so ever, and jumped at the latter - I don't know about other places, but in UK you can't get the vr1 version for less than £1000 normally! So, after renting one a few months ago, I now am the proud owner of this beast...!

As long as the optics are perfect, and it works, i'd have made the same decision. Lenses are made to be used anyway, they're not ornamental Ming vases, though the 70-200 f2.8 is a work of art!

"Purchase" may not be the proper term - paid $0.00 for this focus tool - basically downloaded it. Was looking to buy one on the internet - there are 'proper' ones at $75-$100+ on eBay, and then some cards that are $2-4. But then I looked and found out how to download and print your own.

Print, cut and glue to some rigid cardstock (I re-purposed an old file folder).

Did one lens but then got busy. I've got a week off next week and should get a chance to do the rest.
I made a +3 adjustment on that lens. On my D610 I can go up to a +/- 20 points.

RE: The DIY Focus Adjustment Target: I think I'll re-print that on a laser printer. on quality paper (maybe even use matte photo paper? but might glare too much?). Then glue to a double layer of card stock (basically a three layer lamination) but this time lay flat with heavy weight and let the glue dry and harden over night. Next day cut with fresh blades in my Xacto knife. And use steel straight edge. This works but I've already bent it. It would be good for one use. It does fold flat and if put into a flat box might keep if cared for . Perhaps a layer of artists acrylic matte finnish (or matte modge podge) would help preserve it.

I finally found a CF card that IS compatible with the D810. That took some tries. Woohoo me; Boohoo Nikon.

I only use it to plug the hole but even so.

I hope in the next FX they reserve a slot for floppy disks. Those are very impractical too.

This has been a purchase intensive week!
First, I get my 1J4 on the 6th. Then my spare battery and case shows up on the 8th.
Yesterday, I ordered an 8 gig Graphite Lytro light field camera. It should be here around the middle of next week.

This purchase was precipitated by my response about flat lens technology and finding out that Lytro was still in business, much to my amazement!

Under $80 including the tripod adapter and shipping!

I just found someone on the FM forum that pulled the trigger on a D4S without permission from the family accountant which resulted in him selling the D800E for a great price. Pulled the trigger as a minor upgrade to my D800. Should be in my hands by next week-end.

Woohoo I'm as crazy as a kid in a candy store - or even @Bill16 with a new camera!! :p

I'll be listing the D800 next week-end though. :( Right after I tell Laurie about the deal I made last night on a 1 Nikkor 70-300. . . .

Picked up a Lee .9 hard grad ND second hand for €40 last week. Delighted with the price as they are over €100 new. It's in prefect condition and is already getting a lot of use.

Damn, missed that deal. I've had my eye on one of these for a while as a pocket/carry camera.
Looks like Adorama still has this....

There is a deal right now on the S9700 for $119 (refurb), but I'd really like a hotshoe and the flash on the S9700 is flimsy.

I've been looking at specs for a new tripod, but it's hard to make a decision based solely on specs. So today I went to my local camera store to see features I do and don't like. Since they didn't have a head like I wanted, I came home and did a little more research then narrowed down my choices to 3 tripods: two were by Manfrotto and one was by Gitzo (aluminum).

Back I went to the store to make a decision. Ultimately it was the Gitzo that won out although there isn't much in the way of reviews on it--it is no longer manufactured. It is a Gitzo GT-2340L Series 2 Aluminum Tripod--and paid a VERY fair price of $229.99. There is a seller on Amazon who has one for sale, but I'm quite pleased with the price I paid.

I narrowed down my choice of heads two different Manfrotto models, but since the store only had one of them in stock, I will go back and compare when the other arrives.

Below is a stock photo of the tripod from B&H's web site:

Awesome choice on the Gitzo my friend! I have one very much like yours except mine is an off center pole for macro, and then I got the newer equivalent carbon fiber version of my first one! They are flat out awesome tripods! I think you got it at a great price too!:D

My Bogen Manfrotto 3021 has a center column that can be converted to a lateral arm if I really want to use it that way. This Gitzo has a removable center column that allows it to get very close to the ground. I really wanted this to use with my 70-200mm f/2.8. At least my load will be lighter to carry now! ;)

Must be an age thing,i had to look that up,i just got a new phone £20 PAYG from tesco, its a phone and a clock :D

I have one of those phones too I think. The kind that has more buttons than screen. It's getting harder and harder to find those. ;)

My cam functions as my clock these days. If I want to know what time it is, I take a shot and check.
