I love coming back to this thread with a new toy.
My Giottos Silk Road YTL9353 arrived today and I am very pleased with it.
Nice and light weight and the perfect height for me.
I have ordered a Giottos ballhead (see my sig) which is on its way and should be here in the morning - that will give me another opportunity to post on here. :)

The next is carrying length but by no means the lowest it goes as the legs can be fully splayed (like doing splits) and the centre column removed and a short (about 1,5") version inserted. Total height above ground about 10cms before camera and head.

And the centre column can be placed in a horizontal or angled position. Pretty cool for macro and stuff!

Nice buy, and remember you are also able to use the camera upside down which will allow you much closer to the ground ;)

Scott, is there a secret to this? I have tried it a couple of times and find it extremely hard to get down in a position to be able to see thru the eyepiece to focus etc. Being less supple than when I was younger doesn't help (maybe I should take up yoga :D)

One of the advantages of the articulated (?) screen on the D5100

Well PK - they don't call it the "slow boat to China" without good reason. But 10 days? Really? I measure my wait time for orders from the orient in weeks not days, when it gets to months then I complain. (The "orient" sounds more sophisticated than just "China" eh?) Now stuff from down south in that US of A place, that can take only a week or three to get here.
I know, I know I really do not expect it to arrive until a month from now. I resigned myself to that fact when I ordered it, but that still does not quell my anticipation..

I'm back with the tripod ball head and I must say I am so impressed.
I guess there are better heads out there but it is hard to imagine how this can be improved.

So here it is.

Giottos Ball head.jpg

In yesterday's post I said that the long centre column can be replaced with a shorter version.
Here are two shots of the shorter column and then one of the column inserted, the tripod set on its lowest and the camera mounted. The whole shebang is about knee high.
And of course as Scott said the centre column can be reversed and the camera could hang below the tripod for an even lower version.

And now upright

The splits.

The last is not a great photo with that background but you get the picture.

Congrats. Nice pick up. I sooooo want to get a nice tripod, but that would eat into my Tokina 11-16 fund. :cower:

That is awesome buddy! That is the type of tripod as my gitzo! I'm loving the off center pole and the ability to get set up in about any angle! I repeat, that is awesome Lawrence buddy! Woohoo! :D

I don't think you will be disappointed with the Giottos MH1300 head.
I have had one for over two years now, use it almost every day and its still brilliant and easy to use.

@Lawrence got me thinking about tripods again and I figured if I am going to be comparing lightning triggers soon then I better get another decent tripod, this time I have gone for a Gitzo GT3541XLS Systematic tripod. I think this will be my goto for wildlife photography.

Well I finally bought a Nikon MB-D10 battery grip to go onto my D300 since I stole the one that was on it for my D700! Lol :)
I won't add an L bracket to this one, since the cost is too much to do it for a third time. The ARCA swiss type mount will have to do for any tripod needs for this D300! :)
