Here in FL, we have small red ants too, but here we call them FIRE ANTS, and with good reason. A single bite by them burns like fire. They inject an alkaloid venom when they bite which by the next morning has turned the bite site into a raised pustule that itches.

I have only seen these in the streams at their 1st stage and once when full grown. I was shooting pictures for my daughter and her husband flipped over a concrete log and there were ten of them. When I went back today one had molted out of its black suit. When they are in the streams they are called hellgrammites and at this stage they are going to be Dobson Flies.
