This is a Robber Fly, Laphia is my best guess. They hunt bees and wasps on the fly, quite cool to watch!

Quickie shot from this afternoon while my wife was out front watering some plants. Grabbed my D600, which had the 24-70 on it and rapid fired a half dozen shots of a couple of carpenter bees hanging around our cone flowers. Here's one of the shots, heavily cropped.
